First time ive been able to get a good shot of one of these, they usually take off when flash goes off. If anyone knows what its actually called i would appreciate it.

Wonderful captures.
Probably didn't startle becasue it was busy eating - these dolichopids are insectivorus.

lovely captures, you'd need an expert to narrow it down to genus/species but you could look through 6pp of Dolichopodidae here:

Hi Filling ...

Nice shots of a skitty critter.

I usually use manual flash when shooting these so there is no pre-flash to scare them away. Sometimes I have used the pre-flash to get them jumping and then aiming the camera just above them to catch them in the air ;) .
