Will a filter help keep dust out of the 17-55mm IS lens?

I have a 17-55 on the way because I got a good deal on it and I got fed up with my Tamron 17-50.

I keep hearing about dust issues with the 17-55. Will a front filter help keep dust from getting inside? I'm looking at a BW MRC UV filter for that case.

No, it won't keep it all out, but it will help. Best way is to regularly extend the zoom and wipe down the outside body of the lens.

Once your warranty is up the front element is very easy to clean on your own. Just held in by three screws.

Actually with my newest 17-55mm I haven't had any dust issues yet. We'll see if that continues...The last one I had a filter mounted and it didn't keep dust out.
