Trouble Loading Photos..

Hey guys, I just recently bought a 40d and I'm getting frustrated-
when I plug my camera into my laptop only some photos will open,
and other photos say "Photo gallery can't open this picture or video. This file format is not supported, or you dont have the latest updates to Photo Gallery."
so my question is, what do i do?? has this happened to anyone else? And if i need to just update Photo Gallery does anyone know how to do that either?

I can't address your particular problem but I would suggest getting yourself a cheap usb card reader. Faster, easier, and way less problematic than direct camera downloads.

Are the ones that it can't open raw files per chance?

What software are you using to open the photos? Is it the Canon software? Get a good card reader is the first thing.

A card reader will not help with a "cant open" message. That means either the file is the wrong format or the file is corrupted. All a card reader will do is allow you to move it from the camera to the pc easier and quicker.

Right, I think we all were just making an observation and recommendation to start using a card reader. If the file is corrupt from the camera, it will be corrupt from the card reader.

Some versions of Windows don't see the camera as a drive, like a card reader or a thumb drive.

I had to load some photos at work and I didn't have my card reader, so I plugged my camera in with a USB cable and started copying. When I closed the camera's explorer folder there was an error copying the files. So it didn't act like a regular drive.


Try copying all the files to your hard drive first.

britt49 - you don't mention what OS your using. Windows or Mac? Vista or 7 or XP?

As mentioned above, some OS versions see the camera as a drive others don't. Also, you need a Canon Codec to view (or even see) RAW files directly from Windows.

So as was mentioned earlier, most poeople have found that rather than trying to connect directly to the camera using the USB cable and EOS Utility, we find it much easier to take the card, put it in a card reader and transfer your pictures (RAW and JPEG) to your comnputer. Then you don't have to worry about how well your camera connects to your PC and how it shows up as a readable device.
