In the first photo, the players fill less than one-third of the picture which means maybe two-thirds of the picture can be cropped away. (Try not to cut people in half in the background though. Were your lights direct or bounced and what reflectors were you using? One other thing you might want to try is using a gobo to block some of the spill light that is falling into the audience this will help clean up that BG by making it darker.
