I wasn't sure if I should post in equipment, but I thought I'd get more responses here. Since I've just gotten into studio lighting and discovered lenses have an aperture other than 2.8. I was wondering what you favorite studio lens or lenses are. Please let me know what body you shoot with if it's not in your signature.

i like using lenses that can give me between 80 - 100mm. Maybe 135mm if i have enough space to back up. This is on a 5D II.

Personally, I usually use the 70-200 a lot in studio, and most portraiture. It can be a bit long when trying to do full body, but luckily the studio I use has enough room for it. Though, when I'm working with newer models, I tend to use the 50 or a borrowed 24-70, to kept distance to subject a little closer for easier interaction.

I find a lot of people wont use anything longer than 135mm in studio, and if that long only for close head shots.

That's interesting. I was only using my 17-55 on my last shot. I was trying to keep at least 30mm for full body shops, but my back was all the way against the wall. When I was trying to get a head shot, I had to zoom all the way in and move forward.

In my small living room mostly 70-200mm f2.8 on 1dmk2 for single person shots. For group shots, my 28-75mm.

Depends on how much space you got. But keeping in the telephoto area is usually ideal. Unless you are going for a certain effect.

Interesting. I've been using and pretty happy with my 24-70. I'll have to give the 70-200 a shot. Definitely need room to back up.

Thanks for all the input. I'll definitely try a longer lens on the next go round.

Unless you have a super expansive shooting area, FL preference is usually limited by shooting space available and the ability to separate the subject from the background by about 5-8'. With those space limitations, which takes a shooting space at at least 23- 25' long and a camera-to-subject distance of 8-10'

standing portrait = 'normal lens'
waist up portait = 'normal' * 1.5
head and shoulders portrait = 'normal' * 2
tight headshots = 'normal' * 2.5 to 3.5

My 70-200 is my standard go to lens for product and headshots, otherwise my 28-135 or get my hands on a 24-70.

Used to use the 70-200 2.8 but got tired of the weight and I really don't like to use a tripod when photographing people so now I use the 24-70 and 85L, also for product and table top I use the same lenses but sometimes include extension tubes. This is on FF and MKIII-1.3crop. The other lenses I have gone through are the 24L, 35L, 24-105L, 135L, 200L 2.8 with extension tubes and 180 Macro.

Wilt, so for my crop, 'normal' would be about 30?

Right, just about...converting 50mm for standard 135/FF 'normal' the true scaled FL is 32mm

70-200 is my first choice, with the 24-70 on the second body. The studio I normally use is about 35' front to back, so that just does give enough room to get the model 10' or so in front of the BG and have a nice working distance between her and I with the 70-200.

1D2 ans 1DS
