Hello all,

I will need your help as I am not so up to date with the current market of decent P&S cameras.

I have a friend who wants to get a superb quality, but doesn't need DSLR.

What is currently available with a good optics and in general a good build quality?

It can be Canon, but there might be other Brands. There is no Brand connection.

Thanks for your help.

The Canon SX10 IS (external link) and SX20 IS (external link) are good models to consider.

We were not talking about price limits, just trying to understand what is good.

Well, I just bought a SD780IS for around 200 bucks, which I think is great for the price. One can spend double or more for a better P&S. Canon S series is great in the higher price ranges.

A lot of your decision should be based on lens choice, ie, super zoom or no, and how large of a camera is comfortable for you.

P&S cameras also have lenses?
I know that some do....

What my friend is looking for is simple, very high IQ P&S camera....it can be Canon, but this is not a restriction.

That's what Canon distinguishes within model lines...like the SD9xx series, one will have wider zoom, another a longer zoom, another a greater zoom range... Canon 900 series has SD980 vs SD970 vx SD960, etc.

What is the competition to G11 on other Brands side and how good is G11?

If price is no obstacle, Oly's E-P1 or Panasonic GF1 are about the same size as the G11 but with larger sensor's and have interchangeable
lens. Here's a thread discussing the G11 vs GF1
