If you're looking for a quicker way to install Windows 7 than via DVD, try installing it from a USB drive. This guide describes two ways to make a bootable Windows 7 USB drive.

Thought I'd try that today - alas it supports only the ISO downloaded from MS.
Had a wee bit of bother as WinXP wouldn't format my CF as NTFS so eventually downloaded a HP USB format util - http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197 (external link)

once that happened okay I used trial version of UltraISO to burn the ISO (previously claimed to be invalid by the MS tool) to the card. I probably could have done without doing the NTFS format but it was in one of the avail instructions... Installing as we speak...

update: Win 7 installed quickly and with little fuss. Got itself on the network and downloaded an update or two no problem at all.

That was, until I couldn't access the second partition I had on the drive with all my website files on it...
nothing I don't have a copy of elsewhere, but would be nice to know beforehand if an OS install was going to delete other partitions...

Probably didn't delete it, rather just assumed it was a non-OS partition (recovery, etc) and just didn't show it. If you go to disk manager, should still be there

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Exactly, the disk manager in my BIOS, for some reason would only recognize 3 drives. CD rom, HDD and flash drive. after I installed Win7, I went back and reconfigured the BIOS to normal ( had to set it up to recognize a flash drive as a bootable HDD) and there was my other HDD's. Can't explain it, can only relate it...:D

That's what I thought - I tried booting from a Hirens boot CD and the "data" partition no longer exists. Have got some Acronis partition software looking for anything deleted that can be restored but suspect I'll just have to re-create it, not a biggie as it was mostly photo's I was sharing online. I might try the process again in the same order to confirm that it loses the partition in the same way. (curious geek...)

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll give the BIOS a lookthrough when I get home, although I had only one physical HDD whichj was previously partitioned into a 30G OS part (WinSVR 2k3) and a 200G data part.
