Clearly there is a need for Canon to provide fold out monitors if people can market a product like that.

Before the Gigtube there was the ZigView (external link), establishing that there was a market for Live View on SLRs (film and digital).

I looked at the zigview a while ago but decided not to buy it because the reviews said it had a delay. But your right a tool like this would definetly be useful.

Actually, the extreme non-success of the Zigview is what makes me think the demand isn't that great.

Both of these viewing devices market themselves to an extreme small audience IMHO. In the studio photographers shoot tethered already and out in the field, there just is no need for that kind of gadget.

It may not be as small as you think. People may not be ready to pay the price of the initial offerings (ZigView, for instance) but they stimulate interest, both in the potential client base and from the camera manufacturers. And people will improvise solutions (see the iPhone DSLR Remote applet, for instance) around added camera features. I'm in an aviation history group with one of the curators of the NASM; while we were talking about an upcoming meeting he told me how he was using it to get detail shots for documenting artifacts in-place in the aircraft (these are WW I vintage, so clambering all over them is just not in the cards; they're actually on exhibit so a fancy rig to hold both the photographer and the camera while zooming in on the detail just isn't in the cards.

Many field macro shooters would welcome something like this, allowing them to see what they're shooting without lying stretched out to see the viewfinder. If you're photographing from in the middle of a crowd, they'll help too, since you can get the camera up beyond where you can see directly through it. And if you're doing any amount of video with the camera, it'll help too since you won't necessarily have to adopt the unsteady arms-length attitude with a 5D2 or 7D and L glass; you can use a less unstable waist-level position for the camera.

I have been thinking about one of these all week. The current promo includes several freebies. If I pull thr trigger this weekend I will certainly write a review and post pictures.

If I read my email ad correctly- IF you buy the wireless Gigtube ($299) you get a free wired Gigtube and a free digital intervalometer. Seems like a good deal.

In the product pictures the Aputure screen seems a tad smaller than the LCD on the camera. How about a 5" remote screen and you can feel almost like large format?

I would sooner buy it from Amazon than linkdelight. It is thru fotodiox and I have purchased from them before!

Admittedly, it looks kinda cool. It'd be easier to use for macro or lining up shots low to the ground than the display on my XS. Essentially, you're adding a rotating screen like the 60D, which can be useful.

Wish it was a bit larger than 2.5 inches though. Kinda surprised it's only 150.

I was almost sold until they showed the price which was a little hard to swallow. Maybe for $80 but $150 is over the top for such a small niche viewer. I can tether a DVD player that is far more functional and offers a much bigger display for much less.
