Yes, if you want to just "TRY" it. Else, just go for the 50mm 1.4 if you are going to hold onto it.

Absolutely not. I'd try to find a 50mm f/1.0. You can still step it down to f/1.8 if you want. It does everything the nifty fifty does, so clearly it's better right? :p

Best investment I have made on lenses. I think it is a great lens for the price. The motor is loud and it hunts in the dark, but if you use it right, it is amazing. I have had a hard time removing it from my camera because I always wana take pictures with it!

If money is no object, then by all means go for 50 1.0L, haha! :D
In all seriousness, the 50 1.8 was my first lens after my kit lens, and I love it. For the price, you can't beat it; excellent colors, and it is razor sharp.
It is a bit noisy when you're using the AF, but you get over it. Also, in low light, as already mentioned, it does hunt. Ergonomically I do not care for the manual focus ring.
But for the price ... there is not much reason everyone should have one.

The 50/1.8 is a mixed bag. I think it is a lens that most photographers will use for a while and then move on from. The AF performance is so poor that most people will get frustrated after a bit and get something better.

That said, for a newbie photographer the lens has one big merit. This is a lens that allows somebody with a Rebel and an 18-55 to experiment with low light ambient and shallow DOF for a small outlay. Often the low cost of the 50/1.8 is worth while for this experience.

If you don't know much about the effects of high apertures and "fast" lenses, then by all means get it. It's a better investment than spending money on a book to explain the effects of depth of field and "bokeh." Best ~$100 you can spend.

However, if you end up liking the results, don't expect yourself to hold on to it forever. You *WILL* learn the disadvantages of the lens (build quality, AF, etc.) and want to upgrade. But even then, I can't see you losing much money in the end because it's such a great deal.

I have one, and I don't use it very often. It was definitely worth the purchase though. It helped me understand framing, and ambient light photography.

Great lens for learning.

that one had AF issues and is long discontinued.
p.s. that lens is too expensive for an enthusiast... you wanna pay +3000 for a 50mm f/1.0L lens that is not even working properly?
(not that every copy is crap)
