Ill be purchasing the 7D this coming tuesday and im wondering which lense to buy. I currently have the tamron 28-75 and was thinking of replacing it with the 24-70 L. I dont shoot anything really beyond say 100. I do portraits, sports, and landscapes (uwa i know). What do you guys think? fyi not interested in the 17-55 is i know its a good piece of glass but im going L on this purchase.

Sounds like you have your mind made up. The 24-70 is excellent if the range works for you, it's a lens I much prefer on FF. If working with a cropper I'd go 17-55 again in a heartbeat, could care less that it isn't L. Really if your Tamron is working for you I would look at something to compliment and give you new capabilities, such as the EF-S 10-22.

Have you thought about going with primes? The 35L is a really great piece as well as the 85 f/1.8.

Thanks for the suggestion the tamron does work for me extremely well but what im really paying for is the build quality. Ill be out in harsh weather shooting and i worry with the Tammy out there. Thats what keeps me away from the 17-55 is i dont know how well it would hold up in harsh weather. I have looked at the 10-22 however one thing i did mention is that im buying with an eye of going full frame in another year and a half.

The primes are very tempting! I would love to own one in the future. Especially the 85 but my pockets aren't too deep and i fear i would be longing for a zoom once again. Decisions decisions

If you're very concern bout weather, consider 17-40 though it's rather short but if you're not a 'wide' person, I guess 24-70 or 24-105 would be good. I would then sell Tamron and 18-55 for a 10-22 or Tokina's 11-16.

although not really within your requirements - IMO I would have a 70-200 L in my kit.

Get the Non-IS one

The 24-70L is a great lense, whether it's on a Full or Cropped camera. It's really sharp, but it's no way as sharp as primes. I'm sure you could both 17-40L as well as the 85 f/1.8 if you wanted to and still have some cash to spare.

By the way, what kind of lighting do you usually shoot in?

If you just want a nicer version of yourTamron 28-75, then get the 24-70L. But really how will that add to your capabilities. Basically you will have the same range, same aperture, so pretty much same pictures.

Where is your kit lacking now or are you just trying to burn cash? If the latter, just buy a 35L. Awesome all-purpose prime for your 7D.

If you must have L, I would suggest the 16-35 2.8 L MII. That will get you into a bit better wide range, I always felt very limited by 24 or 28 on the crop cameras. It still leaves you with a use for your 28-75. I am fairly sure that once you are using your 7d for a while, the appeal of the full frame will dissapate some, and you my want to keep it, when you get the full frame. You will love that 7D, maybe as much as I do mine. I use the 17-55 2.8 IS and leave my beutiful 16 -35 in the drawer, Sold both my Tammy 28 -75 and my 24 -70L Both nice lenses. But as I said above, too long on the short end for me.

What kind of harsh conditions are you planning on shooting in? If FF is a year and a half away, I would just buy for your needs now. Lenses hold their value pretty well.

I'm bidding on a Zeiss Sonnar 2.8/85 that will likely fetch less than $300. You can get a few primo MF lenses for 1 of the AF species.

Hmmm i also thought about the 24-105 and i was always thinking about the 11-16 tokina. More thinking to do.

Thats an awesome lense also!, which i will def have in my arsenal in the future but after i solidify the wide to mid range. Just because i have a feeling i wont be using it as much as the other ranges.

Your totally right. It wouldnt increase my capabilities at all but upgrade the lense itself nothing else. This is something that has crossed my mind. I have thought about selling the tammy which would help cushion the fall and frees up more funds for another possible purchase say in a month or so to cover the wider end.

Btw primes im torn, 35 or 85? On crop it makes more sense for the 35 but again that could be up to taste. What do you think?
