I luckily had my camera in hand as this little fellow stopped by to say hi. Based on what I found on the Cornell web site, I presume that this yellow-rumped warbler is a female.
I haven't had much practice with close range shots, but I did learn a valuable lesson -- f/5.6 at 15 feet for a 400 mm lens does not give adequate DOF (about one inch total). Since these birds do not sit still for more than about a second, my guess is that at this distance, a shorter FL might be more satisfactory -- I am thinking that my 100 mm macro might be better for these closer range shots. If I ever get to the point of being able to feed them by hand, I guess that a wide angle lens might be in order.
