I luckily had my camera in hand as this little fellow stopped by to say hi. Based on what I found on the Cornell web site, I presume that this yellow-rumped warbler is a female.

I haven't had much practice with close range shots, but I did learn a valuable lesson -- f/5.6 at 15 feet for a 400 mm lens does not give adequate DOF (about one inch total). Since these birds do not sit still for more than about a second, my guess is that at this distance, a shorter FL might be more satisfactory -- I am thinking that my 100 mm macro might be better for these closer range shots. If I ever get to the point of being able to feed them by hand, I guess that a wide angle lens might be in order. :D

Nice shots Bill, good looking Yellow-rumped... I miss my warblers; they are what I spend my time shooting from mid April until October... DOF is a constant with the 400, I carry my 70-200 f/4 on a harness so I can change as quick as possible... ;)

Thank you db and Judy. They do not seem to stay here very long. Maybe they continue on further south for the winter. I have tried to get pictures of them before but they usually get in the middle of thick bushes. I was on my way to find some herons and egrets when this opportunity came up.

The butter butts will be here in big numbers soon and stay all winter. Cool little birds.

Thanks, Harvey. I do appreciate all of the helpful tips that you have posted. And I especially appreciate the high ISO images that you have posted to encourage others to not be afraid of using high ISO with the 7D. These images were shot at ISO 800 which I never would have been willing to try without some encouragement since it was way outside my comfort zone.

I have found that dealing with the slight noise at ISO 800 using a small amount of NR in NeatImage and then downsizing the image does wonders for noise reduction.

Thanks, Steve. I guess that the little warblers winter near the coast where it is warmer. The birds that pass through here are probably heading for locations closer to the Texas coast.
