A few days ago I had chance to go through my PPIHC pics again and here are a few edits I've come up with:

Looks great! Were you there for the practice days as well? It looks like you changed locations quite a bit. I hung out right above Devil's Playground for most of it. Was a great time this year!

Thanks. Brought back some great memories even though they were from 1971. Froze my patooty off and got one of the worst sunburns I ever had watching the hill climb. Your pics make me want to do that again - maybe without the cold and the sunburn.

Thank you for all the positive comments folks! I really appreciate them.

This was my first time @ PPIHC and I am definitely heading back next year. It was hands down the best motorsports event I've ever been to.

SpeciallySpiked, yes I was there for Wednesday and Thursday practice days. Ericsson crashed about 50 ft away from me on Wednesday morning!

I would love to try and capture this. I was just there this past September.

Can you give us more details?

Basically, how do you get up the hill on practice day? Is there a down time when you can move to other locations? Do they bus you up and down? All hiking?

Thanks for sharing.

Sorry about the delayed response folks, last wef weeks have been pretty busy!

First and foremost thank you for all the positive comments, I really appreciate them! Also happy New Year!

Pikes Peak is pretty damn crazy!

The event spans over 4 days: 3 days of practice and the race day with one day of rest in between. Practice is scheduled during the week and takes place in the early morning hours. The mountain opens @ 3:30 AM IIRC and the practice runs begin at around 5 am and run till 8:30~ 9 AM. The city makes a lot of money from the tourism to the mountain and they do not want to loose any revenue so at 9 am the mountain is opened up to the public traffic. Only on the race day the mountain is fully shut down for the race.

Race day is the only day the drivers get to run the full mountain, on the practice days they only get run a certain section and as you could imagine different groups practice different stages on different days.

There are no buses that would take you up, you either hike or you get there early enough so you can drive your car up before the practice begins. Naturally necessary media credentials re needed. There are some safe parking spots along the mountain that are out of the way of the traffic. Than you are pretty much free to move around, naturally all is at your own risk. One word of advice is to dress very warm! Its freezing up top!

Also, you pretty much want to plan out which spots you would like to situate yourself in media is given a very limited time frame to set up before the start of the practice. Also, the lack of oxygen makes it really tiring to work or hike around, especially with equipment! So you're pretty much are in the same general area for the entire span of the practice.

The night before the race day is the only night when camping is allowed on the mountain, as you can imagine you want to get there pretty damn early to grab a good spot! On a race day be prepared to be on the mountain most of the day, as you can imagine it takes a really long time to get everyone off the mountain.

hope this helps

Rich
