I sent in my 70-200 for repair because it was making a chattering noise when turning the zoom ring while the lens is tilted slighty down.

They sent it back with a note saying they could not find the exact cause.

Shouldn't they have sent me a new one if they couldn't fix it? I will be calling them tomorrow to see what's going on.

How long have you had it? Perhaps try another service centre?

5 months so it's still under warranty

yes it takes pictures fine. but this chattering noise does not sound normal and i don't want something in it to fail after the warranty expires.

Still under warranty so if Canon can't fix it you should push for a new lens. Let us know how this shakes out.

Maybe that means they don't see it as a real issue

maybe that's just IS mechanism moving inside the lens.

Man, that sucks. I'd push for them getting you a new lens.

hopefully i can get a new one. i read the terms on my warranty card and it said they will either repair or replace it with a refurbished one. kind of sucks since I originally paid for a new one, not a refurb.

Hi,

I think you are in the UK, under our law, goods "have to be fit for the purpose", if not you are entitled to a refund or replacement, NOT a refurbished item!!!

I agree

New should be replaced by new, not refurbished.

Hope you get the issue resolved

If Canon (I presume you sent it to Canon UK?) say there isn't a problem the betting is that there isn't a problem.

Is the zoom ring smooth and free to turn?
If not then there is a problem.

Does the lens have IS?
Does the lens make this noise when not mounted on a camera?

If the answer is yes to IS and no to the other question then as earlier said it's only the IS working and therefore not a problem.

If it is still under warranty I would push VERY HARD for a new lens. Seems like they should have just replaced it in the first place under warranty if they could not fix it. Good luck.
