Focus Assist image

I notice that the focus assist image that my camera projects is very out of focus, to the point that I can barely make out the chessboard pattern. Is this normal for the G3?
My old Canon projected a barcode patter that was quite sharp, and I would have thought the G3 would want sharp edges to guage sharpness from.
