I'm going to be getting a rain jacket for my 30D, and i was wonderinf if getting a viewfinder attachment might be a good idea, so that can come through the loop of the jacket. Now i noticed i have one on my old AE-1, can i take it off of that, and fit it onto my 30D, like is there a size difference in viewfinders between the 2?

why not try it and get back to us?
From my understanding, the viewfinders on 35mm film are larger than todays digital ones.

Well that all depends on the size the the sensor( 1.6 crop, 1.3 crop, full frame) and the size of the viewfinder. A EOS-1v and a 1D mark III will both have the same size viewfinder because they are both have a 100% viewfinder and have the same size mirror. The 7D has a 100% viewfinder as well but because it has 1.6 crop sensor means it also has a 1.6 crop mirror, and even with a 100% viewfinder it will not be as large as a full frame, or film, camera with a 100% viewfinder. Do you understand what i mean?

Yea i get what you mean, I don't know too much about the AE-1, but in regards to the 30D, i know it is a 1.6 crop factor, with, i think, a 96% viewfinder.

I don't think the AE-1's eye-cup will fit a 30D. I don't have a 30D anymore to check for ya tho.

ACTUALLY, I take that back. It SHOULD fit.

I say this because my Angle-Finder A (dates back to 1979 or so) fit my 40D when I tried it. And if I recall the eyecup mount of the 30D and 40D are the same.

100% coverage can mean different things. The 97% viewfinder can actually physically larger but not cover the very edges of the frame being captured. Conversely, a 100% viewfinder could, in theory, be on a Rebel XT but be very small in physical size.

I'd rather look at a LARGE 80% coverage Viewfinder than a small 100% coverage viewfinder. You can crop later after all.

100% coverage mean 100% coverage OF THE MIRROR.

The mirror in 1.6x crop cameras just happens to be small.

If you want to see a TRULY large viewfinder in a 35mm camera... go peak into a Pentax SuperProgram or a ME. Its like a movie theatre experience.

Sounds great in theory - fails in practice. The 1D MkIII and the 7D both have the same fitting for the eyecup.

The external size of the eyepieces in various cameras has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the differences in the internal optics in the viewfinders. It would not surprise me, for example, to see roughly the same size eyepiece (external size, that is) on virtually every handheld camera format in existence.
