Today in the Globe & Mail there was a story about a piece of art hung outside a gallery on the downtown eastside. For those not familiar with Vancouver, we have the 2010 Olympics coming up shortly yet still a huge homeless and junkie population that lives primarily on the downtown eastside of the city... what the city intends to do with this population when the mass of tourists arrives were still not sure. Many citizens here are outraged over the spending going on for the Olympics and their tourists while ignoring the basic necessities of humans that already live here.

So the story was about a piece of art that used the famous 5-ring symbol of the Olympics and inside 4 of the rings were frowny faces and only inside one was a smiley. Very subtle... very effective. It was art meant to look like graffiti yet the city threatened the gallery with copyright infringement (over a work of art!!) because it used the 5-rings.

For that story the Globe & Mail chose to take a photo off of Flickr from a very active Vancouver street photographer... without his permission. Brilliant move there running a story about copyright infringement and then stealing a photo to use in it.

The Globe and Mails's comment at the bottom of the Flickr page was epic. I hope this is resolved amicably.

What most cities do is they entice the homeless to temporarily move with offers of food and shelter. Once the Olympics are over it will be business as usual.

You'd think they would know better.

Thing is, we're already the warmest and most street-friendly place in Canada and we have quite a large supply of shelter beds already. I don't want to generalize but many of our homeless here have mental issues, nevermind drug issues, and aren't always interested in cooperating or going to a shelter. Maybe like the Democratic Convention in Denver they will get tickets to the zoo?

Well, yeah. That's pretty much the homeless everywhere. I'm not going to recommend that you ship them here to Detroit for the duration though as conditions here are probably worse.

Watch. There will be a homeless roundup just before the Olympics.

Tickets to someplace else for sure.

It's a reality that many won't admit but there are some street people in the world who flat out don't want help and will get violent over their right to live as they choose.

Ah yea I didn't notice your location. I've been considering investing in Detroit real estate but my wife cleaned out the change in the couch cushions I was going to use (Canadian change, no less).

I'm holding out hope for Summer Olympics Detroit in 2016.

We take Canadian money. We can spend it at the 'Windsor Ballet' as it is known. But you have to tip the strippers with $5 as you cannot tuck a Loony into a G-string.

I see where even Red Bull decided the Air Race this year was in Windsor and NOT Detroit. :(

Hahahah that was one of my first questions upon being taken to a Canadian strip club... "so the minimum you can tip is $5??"

We haven't hooked up for a fun thread like this one in a while Hoff.

Let us know how the homeless situation goes this winter.

Apologies to the mods about the OT thread but it was originally meant to be about copyright infringement.

Our government is treading into uncharted territories with the Olympics and free speech -- they have threatened $10,000 per day fines to anyone displaying derogatory signage concerning the Olympics. There was also a bill introduced that would allow warrantless home entries to anyone displaying anti-Olympic signs in their windows that was at least modified before being passed.

I have pitched what I believe is a reasonable settlement to this problem. I hope CTVglobemedia will appreciate where I'm coming from and agree to the terms I've proposed.

Cheers to all who offered supportive comments and thanks, TheHoff, for telling your friends. :)
