The flatirons back of Boulder, Colorado are huge blocks of sandstone that were uplifted millions of years ago when the present Rocky Mountains were forming. They are so-named because a front-on view suggests the stove-heated flat irons of long ago. I have heard that the same sandstone beds are 15,000 to 20,000 feet underground just 20 miles east of here. I measured the slope of the Third on this photo as 37 degrees. This is usually a technical rock climb. What do you do when you get to the top? - repel off the back side. Unfortunately, there have been a few fatalities on the Third Flatiron. It is now off limits to climbers from late fall to July, because of nearby nesting raptors.

The same geological activity that formed the flatirons, created the Red Rocks ampitheater outside of Denver, Roxborough State Park and Garden of the God outside of Colorado Springs.

Nice shot. A bit dark on my monitor here at work.

Thanks, KAC and cfcRebel. Red Rocks has us beat in terms of color.
The photo below is a crop from the whole image, with some brightening applied. The lower part of the third flatiron is concealed by a hill from where I took the photo.

Love the flatirons though. Very Unique Feature of Boulder County!

I've got to get up there and hike soon.

I lived about 300 yards from those for 4 years. Gotta love boulder! Nice shots, now go hike a few 14ers or the divide at the tunnel and you'll get some amazing panoramas (as well as bring back some great memories for me).

Thanks, Stan and Togs. I have changed out the first image for a brightened version - it is much better now.
