Anybody using their 70-200 lenshood (ET-74) on the 50mm 1.4?

I figured out if I put it on the 1.4 and add a rubber band around the 50 it stays snug. Looks to me like it will not even vignette on the 5D full frame (unless perhaps the sensor sees more than the viewfinder)

Anyway looks like it should do great as a shade....

And if you drop it, will it help protect the lens? Not a good time to be cheap if you ask me. I have a dedicated hood for each lens I use. Use the correct hood.

+1 you should always use the accessories meant for your gear.

I'm afraid I have to take exception to that theory. :D

Canon makes some fine stuff and some real crap too (memory cards and filters come to mind, how many of you would only consider using canon brand filters or mem cards when nearly everyone else makes a better one?)

Canon does not always make the best products for every shoot. sometimes third party stuff is pretty darn good and sometimes you can do it yourself far better than Canon.

It really depends, but I feel you shouldn't limit oneself by only using only designated accessories.

Photography has a long and proud tradition of mods/hacks/ and cobbles.

Not that you should blindly modify your camera but with proper caution and a little research you can easily exceed the capabilities that using canon only approved accessories would limit you to...

I should think so. With the 70-200 hood the little 50mm sits inside a plastic cocoon.

Just get EF-62 (am i right?) for your 50 1.4... b/c using hood for 70-200 on your 50mm will block part of its FoV.

Trust me i would be the first to tell you not everything canon is great. Look at my grip down there ;) However, in this situation that lenshood is optimized for the 70-200 and not for the 50 1.4. Lensehoods are a bit different because they are designed around the focal length. Thats what i should have originally stated :D

Do you spend the money for a Canon Hood or an aftermarket that is made for that lens? I have purchased two Canon Hoods, but have not purchased one for the 50 yet and was just currious of your thoughts.

If you want to try it out, buy a clone hood for the 70-200 off ebay. I bought one specifically to use on the 70-200 because I shoot through the fence a lot at baseball and softball games. I don't want to ruin the original. In fact, it's hard to tell which is which. I plan to cut the hood off square for this season s I can get it perpendicular to the fence and still not damage the lens.

Well, the Canon hood is pretty much a sure bet to be a good, snug fit on the bayonet mount. I'm not as confident that third party hoods will fit as well... but they might. Certainly is an option.

For a few dollars, I bougth the fitted "correct" hood for any lens that didn't come with one, and am slowly adding extras - either Canon or third party that fit well - just in case I lose or break one (well, except for the 300mm and 500mm hoods, I'm pretty careful with those since they cost as much as some lenses do... ).

You can always make them yourself.....

http://freephotostuff.blogspot.com …ee-lens-hoods-part-i.html (external link)

I was thinking of using the PDF cutout with neoprene, much more versital than the hard plastic...

Back to the OP:

The 70-200 hood fits deep on the 50mm so no vignette (even on full frame) and it is far larger than the lens so it is completely protected inside the large hood....

I will obviously need to get a photo to explain.... I will try to get one done soon...

It always seemed silly to me to use the "correct, proper, OEM, whatever" lenshood on an EF lens mounted to a crop body.... right of the bat you are making the hood 1.6x less effective...... as far as I know all canon ef (efs????) lenshoods are made for full frame...
