We are shooting a three day basketball tournament in a borderline light enough gym. The walls are grey brick with a dark ceiling as well. I've seen maxpreps use strobes in the gym before but don't know what type they were using. We are new to off camera lighting and would appreciate some help from the basics up to the specifics.

We have 5D Mark II, 50D, 200 mm 2.0, 70-200 mm 2.8 IS, Canon EX430 II for the tournament but are willing to rent more equipment for lighting.

Thanks for your help!

I use Alien Bees AB800's. How dark is your ceiling and how high is it? Do you happen to have a photo of the gym? Grey is great to bounce off of.

If bouncing the strobes isn't an option, you could always shoot them direct, but then you get some harsh shadows. Some people prefer the harsh shadows. I personally like the bounced look better.

If you're going to be renting, you could rent some high-power Speed-o-trons.

Oh, and welcome to POTN!!!

Oh ok. the sides of the gym are grey bricks and the ceiling is white. Its about 50 feet high. Sorry I don't have any pictures of the gym. I dont know anything about the remote controlled flashes and what to use. Do you have any specific models you would recommend?

Thanks for welcoming me in! how bout the eagles?!
