I have a separate policy through my insurance company just for my valuable personal property. For 3,700 coverage with a zero deductible costs me $58/year. Hopefully I never have to use it.

I have a separate policy for my gear as my home insurance has a limit for photography equipment that doesn't come close and my car insurance has a limit for items in the car that would barely cover one lens.

My separate policy is specifically for photographers and covers things like dropping lenses in a river while swapping them and having stuff stolen from your car/hotel etc.

Here in the UK it costs me £26 per month for £10,000 worth of equipment and covers me worldwide.

Having had stuff stolen before and finding my home insurance didn't cover the amount that was stolen, I'd say it's well worth it. More so if you travel a lot and have to leave stuff in your car.

Have a personal articles policy along with my homeowner policy. I list each piece of gear and value. The coverage includes several laptops as well and, I think, costs around $200 per year--but that's probably for around 12,000 worth of coverage. No deductible.

State Farm has a rider that costs $12 per thousand, no deductible. If you have to make a claim it doesn't effect your other policies.

State farm insurance...about $192/yr for $16k ($1.20/$100); covers any and everything, except damages outside of the US/Canada. I only insured my lens and camera bodies for current replacement cost. In my opinion, extended warranties is crap and a big rip off with lots of hidden traps.

I didn't insurance items under $500 (i.e. flash, batteries). I wouldn't want to file a claim for small value items and risk being dropped or price hikes.

Interesting. State Farm told me that I was covered on a recent trip to France. Wonder if they were wrong.

I did go ahead and insure some of my smaller items (mainly flash and a couple of other under $500 items). Wouldn't file a claim on just one of those things, but my thought behind it was if my entire bag was stolen.

I would never go by what an agent tells me. I only go by the written policy; they don't know all of the intricacies. Check your policy terms and conditions.

Yeah I thought of that too^^^but then what if only 1 item is stolen and not all; too many what ifs uhhh...but that's what insurance is about...what ifs.

The only non-lens or camera items I have that is near $500 is the Jobu gimbal head and 580II. I may reconsider and insure these items.

I have a separate policy on my household insurance .. zero deductible, no limit (as long as I'm not making a living at it). I insure everything .. batteries included :), in case of theft or loss.
I wasn't sure how much the policy cost, but I just added my 7D to the existing stuff and it's 1% of the insured value. I'm with Intact insurance Canada (used to be ING).
