I just shot a few test photos and the Canon 17-55 is noticeably sharper than the Tamron 17-50 wide open. Focusing seems so much faster too, especially in low light indoors, which I obviously knew beforehand.

I have to wait until daylight tomorrow to shoot some pics outdoors. So far I am impressed. It seems to be focusing correctly, no front/rear focus. The zoom and focus rings seem to be smooth despite what others have said.

Nice,I've been thinking of picking up the 17 -55 also. Why do the Tamron picts look like they have been cropped more?

this lens is pretty amazing. the shutter speed is 1/8s, hand held, and this shot looks pretty usable

The 17-55 is beautiful. I only got rid of it because i moved to ff. It's my favorite lens and it's far better than the 24-70.

I don't care what people say, IS is very useful in that range especially if you shoot weddings in churches and flash is not allowed. With my Sigma 24-60 f/2.8 I try to keep it at 1/60 or above (If I am very still I can get 1/30 or so) but lower shutter speeds with the Canon are easiliy done. I borrowed one for a weekend and had a much higher keeper rate then I normally would have. My Sigma is fairly sharp (maybe comparable to your Tamron?) but the Canon I used seemed to be sharper (I didn't to any comparo tests, just my impressions). just more pleasant IQ in general.

Agreed here that the 17-55 is an outstanding lens.
I have mine listed in the classifieds forum here for sale as I just never got into photography like I thought I would, but I'm not overly enthused about selling it.
But, my wife is the avid photograher, so I'm looking to buy her a 7D.
If not for that, I'd keep the 17-55, as it's a honey of a lens.

Maybe because the release of 7D or something, in my country, 17-55 is out of stock in many shops i checked :( but finally I found just one copy and going to buy it tomorrow !

?

That lens mounted on a 7D would be one great combo; fast (for a zoom), IS and great high ISO performance on the body.

Yep, but my wife also has the 17-55, so she'll be covered.

in the USA they seem to be everywhere. I got it from Beach Camera for $789 after Bing Cashback.

Non L lenses don't have date codes but I think mine was manufactured recently because the box says compatible with the 7D and we know the 7D came out recently too.

My Canon is sharper wide open and edge to edge than my Tamron. It also seems to have better bokeh and the images seem to have better "pop" .

I got fed up with the low light focusing speed and inaccuracy with my Tamron 17-50 so I decided to get a Canon 17-55 when a good deal popped up.

Do you have to wait the normal 60 days for that Bing Cashback to show-up ? Also does Beach Camera charge a re-stocking fee on returns?

Just curious since $789 is a good deal ! :p

Just checked and the below is Beach Cameras current price going thru Bing:

I got it from Beach Camera's Ebay store when Bing had 20% cashback last week. It was instant cashback deposited into my paypal. Beach Camera sold 22 of them in couple of hours because of the 20% cashback

There was a huge thread about 20% cashback here https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=791941

Cashback is 8% now so it's not so hot.
