I cant seem to change the aperture while the dial is in M mode from the top controls. I have to do it via the LCD which is frustrating.

Any help on that?

Im used to using the 2 dials to change the 2 values.

You change aperture with the rear dial and shutter speed with the top dial.

The most common cause is that you have forgotten to move the on/off switch to the third option, at the top. If it's only at "ON", then the rear dial will not change the aperture. Neither will it change the exposure compensation in P, Tv or Av modes.

You can (probably) reverse the allocation of shutter speed and aperture, if you want the aperture on the top dial and the shutter speed on the rear dial. Not all cameras allow this, but the 7D does, for example.

Hrm, I wonder if this thread may reach legendary status ala LightRules not being able to shoot 6.5 FPS on the 40D.

I was like whats wrong with this cam. Do I need to change one of the personal functions? That would be totally inconvenient, I dont have time to read the manual now lol.

You guys were faster than downloading the manual and reading it.

awesomeness.

Notice that I managed to keep a serious tone in my answer.

But it wasn't easy! :D

Um... Been there, done that, got the Crimson Letter branded on my forehear... so don't feel too bad...

I spent an hour or two trying to figure out why my 550EX or 580EX wouldn't fire... Thought I'd checked everything... I was pulling out what little remains of my hair.

Posted about it here and someone wisely and quickly suggested I check the Custom Functions... There's one that for some reason sets the flash not to fire (maybe to only use the flash for focus assist?).

Anyway, I had set it thinking it was just to disable the built-in flash, which I never use...

Wrong!

D'oh!

p.s. Lightrules post is hiliarous and has gone on for over 100 pages! (I only looked at the first two). I bet one of those classic RTFM responses probably shows up in there somewhere! Let's just hope LIghtrules doesn't get a 7D or we'll be dealing with a lot more "help" requests from him!
