As a result of reading a lot of questions asked / or complaints about, I thought it might be helpful to find out who's using what brands & types of photo paper and what brands of printers are giving good results when paired together. With many of the better types of photo paper having ICC profiles available I also thought it would be helpful to have links to where they can be found. One more thing that I'd like to see discussed is just how & why some of the non traditional papers (if they are actually considered papers) are used; such as fine art paper or fabric based materials.
Considering the huge variety of photo paper aimed at the consumer just starting on the road to printing at home this may save a lot of people from wasting money, ink & time simply because they thought photo paper is all the same. I for one know the right paper / printer combination make a gigantic difference to the print produced when all the settings are correct to match the print driver to the paper the ink's getting laid down on. This point came home just recently when I had to replace my 10+ year old HP 1000 and when I did it wasn't with another HP printer. Even though I knew that it was best to use paper made by the printer manufacturer as a starting point I tried using what I had, which was HP Premium paper (a new package basically) and what a disaster, the ink piled up on top (more or less) making for a very strange print. I've had the reverse too, where one brand of paper I tried absorbed most of the ink giving the print a look as though it was fogged.

Red River papers for me. I have some Innova and Hahnemuhle arriving today. Used to use Ilford Galerie, but prefer the RR papers over them.

Tony; you didn't mention what printer you use.

I was hoping we might get a little deeper into what it is about the specific papers that you like and whether they may have ICC profiles for most of todays popular printers, or are they aimed at "pro" level printers etc.

Espon 3800. I use Red River's profiles for this printer and the papers I use. Makes life much easier.

An HP Photosmart B8350, HP Premium Plus Satin and Gloss, or Ilford Galerie Classic Pearl. Some custom ICC profiles for color printing, I let the printer manage B&W.

I'm having a hard as hell time with H-muhle bamboo paper. I've given up and gone back to luster..at least luster is semi-scratch resistant, fingerprint resistant and dynamic. I can't seem to get the profile to work correctly on this machine, it says its installed and works fine for a bit...start the machine again one day and its gone back to normal, no profile there???

Burned through 6 prints trying to get it right and I'm sick of it. Going back to ultra-premium luster as a standard..people seem to love that paper.

Well I recently purchased an Epson R1900 and put my HP 7960 on the shelf for now. I use the Epson paper as it has given me the most consistent and best photos. I downloaded their ICC profiles from their website. I tried HP glossy paper and it wasn't really glossy at all; it seem to have an orange peel affect on it (kind of rough) and when I printed a test photo, the ink soaked in but from my understanding that's how their paper is. I went to their website and looked for the ICC profiles but could not find them so I gave up and will just stick with Epson paper for now. Funny thing though, the Epson printer has the HP photo paper listed in the drop down menu but the results were carp. If anyone knows where to get HP's ICC profiles let me know as I have HP paper left over from the HP7960 days.

I don't know about the HP 7960, but the ICC profiles for my 8450 were installed with the printer driver. According to the HP support site, you need the version 5.1 of the driver to get ICC support:

Re using HP paper in the Epson that pretty much described the result I got too. The ink was literally piled on top of the paper much like the way an artist uses oil based paint on canvas. It had a really weird look to it and no gloss what so ever.

I use Hahnemuhle Torchon for mat prints and Epson Premium Glossy, this is on an Epson R2880. I use a very cheap paper from Tesco or Staples to proof print the gloss images.

Must just add that I have not had Karls problems with Bamboo, Hahnemuhle profiles seem to be very good with my printer. If Bamboo is causing a problem Karl, try Museum Etching, its a very similar paper. But don't attempt to print from DPP, because the Hahnemuhle profiles don't carry a required tag, DPP refuses to recognise them as valid profiles.

Would you say that RR paper prints better on a Canon printer than Canon HIgh gloss paper would print on a Canon Printer. ?
