Well the year is almost over so I thougth a thread with favorite photo of 2009 would be in order.

Please only post one photo from 2009. If there is a story behind the photo let us know.

This is my favorite wildlife photo of 2009. I was on a 5 day trip to Finland to shoot bears.

Shot at 2.37 am,1D MK III, 400 mm f/5.6L, ISO 3200, f5.6, 1/8s.

Time to run and did I ever, this animal chased me for 200 yards.
you can see by his marks in the sand I held off till the last moment , judging distance by looking through the viewfinder wasnt the smartest idea Ive had and it was almost to late by the time I got turned around and put the peddle down.

If I am allowed to post again, I'll show off a few non-bird favorites.

Does it have to be my favorite? This is not my best but it's one of my favorites. It was taken right at sunrise using only natural light with the MPE-65 hand held. The reason it's my favorite is because it was a very difficult shot to get, was planned out the night before, and it worked exactly as i had planed it would. I was on my back in wet dewy grass at 5:30 in the morning camera in hand, found the little guy in the same place he had been the night before. He was just waking up and coming out to catch some sunshine to get warmed up. As he poked his head out from under his little hidey hole, I was ready for him. I know it's a macro shot as well, but bugs are wildlife, no?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I would bet the adult was trying to scare you off, not the juvie. It's hard to post only one photo, because I have a ton of favorites from this year.

It swooped down on the juvenile though and just stood there for me for a few moments then went flying after the juvenile. If it was trying to scare me, it would have had a better chance by swooping me ;) Either way was pretty cool. Also saw the same adult steal a fish from a heron's mouth that day

I actually have a ton of favorites, mainly because I'm surprised that I got such good shots. But, a few are always standouts in my head for the absolute favorite. These two are currently way at the top of the list, the leopard shot I had my wife print at work around 34"x24" so I could frame it and hang it on my office wall...

When I first took this photo I thought, damn sensor dust but it turned out the painted turtle baby had a hitchhiker
Here is a 100% crop of the above photo to show the hitchhiker ;)

Arizona coyote taken in the mountains east of Flagstaff on October 28th. It wasn't great light, overcast and in the trees, but I like the fall colors.

Posted earlier this year here on POTN, but here's my favorite personal animal shot from this year. Taken at the Pittsburgh Zoo (how I wish it were in the wild!), this leopard took a keen interest in watching my 8 year old son running in front of his enclosure. Maybe you can take the cat out of the jungle, but apparently you can't tale the jungle out of the cat...
