I have no doubt there was several. But it is kinda hard to tell from the magazine rack. Covers dont have Exif info. I mean if they will put in Iphone shot on the cover, why not a 40D?

High end fashion magazines won't be using 40D, they're using medium format cameras. The best example of a 40D I can think of would have to be a sports/auto magazine that shows an action shot, and even those are probably done with a 1D series. No way to really know unless you know an editor at a magazine or a photographer.

Canon 1D3, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (sale), 1.4x converter, 580EX.

Agree with pagnamenta. High end fashion magazines would usually use 1Ds cameras (I remember there was a time in the 90s where the in thing to do was for fashion catwalks to be shot with supertelephotos) or medium format (PhaseOne, Mamiya and now the Leica S2).

I don't see any reason why not, it's the lighting that matters not the camera.

I might suggest Karl, that it has to do with that dreaded term "megapixels" and the ability to crop for use.
Unless the photog is involved in the magazine's editing process, how would he know how to plan for dead-space for advertising placement.

The dynamic range of a Medium format camera makes them the tool of choice for high end work.

I work for a weekly car magazine and use a 40D. This year alone I've taken 24 cover shots with that camera.

High end cameras are great for increased resolution but they're not entirely necessary. If you think about it all it is is a glossy 9x12 print. MF is great for post processing, though if you're wondering about your chances of creating an image using a 40D that would be used on a magazine cover then a 40D I'd assume would be fine. I have had my shots printed from a 50D up to 40x60" or on banner advertisements...I think 30x80 or so. You can print an 30x70 with a 8 mpx cam, chances are it will be seen from a distance.

Don't let the gear limit you :p if that's what the OP is wondering.

I have had newspapers print a 12.5 kb file half a page in size and it still looks great.

I remember seeing a video of a covershoot being shot with a point and shoot. It can be shot with anything, as long as its what the mag wants.
