I havent been satisfied with "casual shots" Ive taken of friends outside at bike events etc...how can i use the 580 to fill in shadows , and not have my subjects in silhouette ? Im not real bright so any specifics as far as setting etc will be greatly appreciated ! :) Forgot to add Im using a 20D

welcome to the forum.

try this: set your camera mode to AV, metering mode to evaluative. choose an aperture that'll result a shutter speed slower than 1/250 sec. and shoot away with your 580 on.

this is just to get you started. please check out the flash sticky at the top of the thread list for more info.

Set the camera on M, set exposure for the ambient light, set FEC to 0 to -1, turn on the flash and take the shot. You need to take several (hundred) test shots in varying lighting condition to get good at it. Also see the EOS Flash sticky written by our own scottbergerphoto in this forum.:)
