And that's just one set of wires in one truck out of many.

(This is actually the NASCAR Broadcast Compound but Super Bowls are of a similar scope)

This is what the monitor wall looks like that the Producer and Director are looking at during a Super Bowl broadcast.
This was from SB 42 .. Giants Vs Pats

I fondly ( or is that not so fondly?) remember sitting in a hole in the ground in a park at the rear of a substation about 15years ago identifying wires for a calble jointer to join together. It was two 100 pair pilot cables, pilot cables are like bigger versions (larger gauge wire) of the twister pair telephone cables. One was a old paper lead cable so the there were no colours on the cables at all, the other was a new PVC insulated with a lovely colour scheme which I can still remember to this day. The fun part of this was it was in the pouring rain and the two weeks preparation meant it had to be done that day. And I wonder why I have an office job now........

I worked it as a broadcast technician for FOX Sports. I think this was my fourth or fifth SB...

The last five years or so of My "Day Job" is more or less documented over on PBase at my "Scenes From The Road" (external link) galleries.

I've been a freelance broadcast technician for nearly 25 years with five National Emmys and three Regional Emmys to my credit. This is the first time in 11 years I'm not in Daytona for the 500 and then on into the NASCAR season.

Feels a little weird but I like where I am and what I'm doing now...

Is that what they're saying is the reason she took her earpiece out? I had not seen any specific reason pointed out so I assumed she was getting either a delay or feedback of some kind.

The technical term is IFB (Interupted FeedBack) which is the system the production people (Producer, Director, Assistant Director, etc) use to "whisper" in an announcer's ear during a broadcast.

Normally they hear whatever mix they prefer (some want to hear everything .. some only want to hear their own voice + maybe sound from the field but no music or other sound effects.) Use of the IFB is through a panel of buttons arranged in front of each production type and there will be one for each individual as well as an "All Call" button which hits everyone at once.

Either someone laid on the All Call, her IFB or there were crossed wires which sometimes happens (though I can't imagine why?) ;)

Thanks for the education Professor Beckman, I know you'd come through. :)

I noticed that she had 2 earplugs, but pulled the left one out of her ear rather violently (she left the right one in) so I was guessing that she was stuck listening to somebody who wouldn't shut up. The feedback hadn't occurred to me at all.

Thanks!

One was maybe an IFB while the other was her foldback.

I noticed she was trying to reach something on her right hip after removing the ear bug. It might have just been a foldback volume issue. Most non-broadcast talent don't get IFB. Instead, there's usually an Associate Director and/or a Stage Manager tagging along who're on wireless headsets that are jacked into the communications system back to the truck. They, along with the actual show production company, handle the cues for music and performances.

The NFL actually "owns" the pre-game festivities and while TV can ask for minor delays here and there, it's the League's clock that is actually "uber alles" until the ball is actually kicked.

I was going to post some shots from the desert (from 2008 ) and I HATE how I processed them. Then I was looking at my "hdr-ish" stage and just cringed. And my "glow everything" state...and and and.....GAHHHHHHHHH

Oh, I totally forgot to ask this on my morning pass through RedRing

Question for -----> Jay Beckman

Since you are our resident expert on broadcast production and control booths, how bad of an ass chewing do you think the guy wouldn't shut up, got? I am of course referring to Queen Latifah's earplug tantrum during "America The Beautiful".

The moment I saw it, I thought of you.

I missed this. Was it during the pre-game 'cause I didn't turn it on until several minutes after the opening kick-off? I purposely stay away from the Superbowl pre-game stuff because it's nothing but a bunch of meaningless hype which is likely broadcast only to sell more advertising time.
