Well, if you had been using a Beamer, he'd have a permanent case of red-eye:)!

well I'm really hoping the BCA calendars turn out better than that.

Well, I've had 8 different calendars from Lulu and something over 100 copies and they've all turned out well. Can't imagine what happened with Wool's.

Hey all!

I tried something new today -- new in the sense that I've never tried it before, duh.

Two or three years ago I bought a couple Better Beamer Flash Extenders specificaly for birding -- they are little contraptions that are meant to magnify flash for focal lengths 300mm or longer. So, I never used them, because I always shot at longer than 300mm and never used a flash. Makes sense, right?

Anyway, it was a dark and gloomy afternoon, headed toward sunset, and I got it into my head to mount one of these suckers on my 1D3, 100-400 with the 1.4x TC and a 580EX to see what I could do and headed out to some nearby wetlands.

Of course, none of the expected ducks were nearby, and the Canadian honkers were smart enough to fly way up there beyond my desired shooting level. But, there were a couple of robins, a male and a female, who hopped around near enough for me to get some shots.

Here are a set with some close crops -- they were taken at 1/160 sec ( but the first one at 1/13 sec) so I was pretty impressed with how they turned out (all at 560mm):

1/13 sec f/11 ISO 400

Nice Rufous-sided Towhee. Song sparrow for the other?

Heh! Well, they are a bit of a hassle, but seem to work better on the rig than they do just sitting in the car:)!

Not to mention safer . . .

iS that a Fresnel lens over the front of the flash?

Yep.

Some time ago...we dealt with a car fire of mysterious origins....turned out to be a Better Beamer left on the seat on a bright, sunny day.

People have left the rig pointed toward the sun and melted out their flashes, too.

It could have been a sparrow, but it was hopping around with a robin (that I didn't get a shot of) so I thought it might be a female robin. But I haven't cracked a bird book in a while:).

Nice results. I have a BB for my 550EX that I have used on occasion and it really helps. I need to get one for my 580...

Fresnel lenses are used in lighthouses to project the beam of light over a longer distance.

Thanks! I have a second one of a different size floating around somewhere -- I don't even know if the one I used was for the 580 or the 430 -- I just kind of made it work:)!

Interesting stuff we've been learning about these lenses! Lighthouses, pennies and car fires, woohoo!

Whew - it's good to be back, and I've missed you all the last couple of days. We are finally dug out from the storm, and now it's time to catch up on everything I've been missing here.

I've tried the 550EX one on the 580 and I could make it work, but it would be better to have the proper one. The 580 has rounder sides and is narrower than the 550...

The photographer at Wild Photo Adventures (external link) actually burned a spot in the LensCoat on his 500mm in one of his episodes. The angle was just right for the sun to shine through his Better Beamer and burn the neoprene...

Nice.

I don't know if you've ever seen the Wild Photo Adventures (external link) site, but the guy shoots a lot in the Carolinas.
