So it wasn't a vacation for these guys, but it was for me. :)

I should have kicked in the vid because one of the recruits got a reaming by a TI. I felt so bad for them.

Any thread regulars sporting a 7D?
Are you experiencing any of the AF issues that seem to be cropping up of late?

I generally don't get spooked by newbies ranting about gear (and I 'umbly apologize for bringing such an issue here) but the number of "What's wrong with my 7D" posts is starting to oddly multiply.

After all the **** and moaning about "I want better bells and whistles in a less expensive camera!" is this a case of "Be careful what you wish for" and has Canon finally built a camera that's too smart for (some) less experinced users? The 7D admirer thread is full of great stuff so it can't be all bad, right?

Wow... Color me bumfuzzled.

(And suffering from severe lack of sleep due to our current Kitty Krisis...)

Sorry to hear about the kitty. Hope he gets to feeling better soon. Were they able to find out what the problem is?

Top o' da marnin' ta ya!

In all seriousness......I am wondering if the newer cameras are so good, that they are also totally unforgiving. Put them in the hands of hacks and suddenly there is a rash of problems. I do think there were some serious issues with the 1D3 that were exacerbated by that same pool of hacks confusing the focus issue with their own shortcomings....leaving Canon to have to trace not only the real issue, but a phantom issue as well.

I am starting to liken the whole thing to handing a 7th grade science student an electron microscope and asking them to use it to count the legs on a horse. Sure it would be cool to have access to the electron scope....but is it really the right tool in the right hands?

I think you both hit the nail right on the head. To a lesser extent, this has been the case when someone tries to move up with their gear.

There have been many, many threads about P&S users being told how good their pictures are so they decide to move up to a DSLR, not realizing there is a learning curve associated with the cameras. That, couple with the person's lack of basic photography knowledge (exposure, composition, etc.), makes it difficult to get the best results out of th enew camera. The usual reaction is "This camera is a piece of junk. I'm going back to my *insert name of P&S here*"

The AF system of the 7D is heads and shoulders above that of the current crop of XXD cameras. Even with over 40 years of photography experience, I'm not sure I could get good results out of one right off the bat. I wonder how many 7Ds that get sent back to Canon come back with absolutely nothing being done to them, but all of a sudden the owner gets better results with it...

People are clearly stupid. You really think that a newer camera will need no learning whatsoever?

It's like driving a tiny trabant or an old lada, and then moving on to an Aston Martin (nevermind the ferraris). From front wheel drive to rear wheel, different positioning of the engine requires a totally different style of driving to keep control...

Same with cameras - P&S to a DSLR, you have to learn to handle it, and only then will you get the best out of it.

Bloody lazy people really do my head in. Canon must make a fortune for fixing (or not fixing ;)) phantom issues only because the end user can't get a $1m worth photo out of it on day one.

Exactly....regardless of your choice of analogies, the outcome is always the same and the result is not pretty. Too many people with too much money....thinking that they can buy skill and talent.

What surprises me is that there is a mode that turns the 7D into a fancy P/S. You need almost no knowledge at all and it will deliver very nice pics. Just green box it. It's the first thing i teach my wife. When you grad the camera, put it in the green box and shoot away. It will take care of the rest.

My brother-in-law is one of those. When he started riding, his dad (a long-time rider) wanted him to get a cruiser style bike. Nooo, he had to have a sport bike. So far, he's wrecked at least two and badly damaged a third... He's now 35 and doesn't have a bike currently because he lives in China, but I'm certain he probably would have wrecked his last one had he remained here.

Me, I've been riding the same bike for 22 years and probably will continue to ride it until it dissolves underneath me or, and more likely, I reach the point where I can't hold it up an longer...

Howdy All...

Nice flying things Harm! Did you go flying in the R-44?

Latest Kitty News: He's been at the Vet all day (Spa Day) and vet is fairly satisfied with progress after 24 hours. Ran another blood series and everything there checks out. He's clearly not happy with being trussed up in an E Collar and the bandage wrap around his mid section supporting the feeding tube.

He'll be coming home again tonight and go back to the Vet on Friday and part of Saturday.

Next major hurdle will be the pathology reports expected probably by end of business on Monday. We hope that will finally tell us what treatment course will be most effective.

Thanks to those who weighed in on the 7D issue. What really bothers me the most isn't the people migrating from P&S directly to 7D (the learning curve is a given) but rather those who are moving "just a little" from 40Ds and 50Ds. If the 7D is giving people this much trouble coming from XXD bodies, it just makes me wonder what (if anything) they learned while using their XXD bodies.

<Shrug...>

Exactly. I moved from the 50D to the 7D. There was an adjustment period, but it was not much longer than the adjustment period for any new camera. It has some different features and some old functionality has changed how it's engaged, like live view. But that's just a matter of getting out there, using your equipment with the manual close at hand and learning your tool. It's not rocket science after all.

P.S.
Hope your kitty mends quickly.

BLASPHEMER! How dare you suggest using a manual written by the idjits at Canon....we all know they have no clue how stuff really works!
