I'm going to put up one of Heather's shots... I've always liked how she caught it at the peak of the action.

QUOTED IMAGE

This was taken with the often-maligned 75-300 f4-5.6 IS...

And that 7-generation-old and therefore incapable of functioning D60?

I'm not really feeling that one Harm. I can't find anything in focus.

no? I'll redo it...get more in focus - harder when there is sky involved - then you can't judge what part is meant to be in focus...thanks for the opinion

it might work better if the water is in focus. What tool are you using to do this?

Gimp2

Add a layer, mask it, bi-linear gradient tool to select which area you want in focus, apply to mask, then select the background and apply some gaussian blurring...et voila.

Silly thing won't let me post a regular response....odd :(

I'll make it easier for you, JJ:

1. Select your photo
2. Add New Layer - Make sure the setting is on Transparent
3. Add Layer Mask to the new layer - I leave it on White / Full Opacity
4. Select Blend Tool
5. In the "Blend" settings, Click on Gradient and ensure it is FG to BG (RGB) - aka foreground to background
6. Select the shape - Bi-linear works well (although you can experiment with other shapes, depending on what you want in focus)
7. Select the area you want in focus.
8. Mask to selection (this should be masked to the new layer)
9. Select the Background (aka the orig photo)
10. In the toolbar select Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur
11. Change the blur radius - 10 to 20 will suffice - I use 20 but trial and error will help you
12. Bingo you're done. You can merge the layers / flatten the image and save etc. etc.

I don't know if it is all the same in Photoshop, but that is the method I know for Gimp2
