Red sky in the morning's a shepherd's warning!

I thought that only applied in our hemisphere as with Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight :-)

Not at all, although it doesn't work in the tropics where I am. In the temperate zones of both hemispheres, where weather systems move generally from west to east (due to the rotation of the earth but that's another very complex story), including across southern Australia, it can be a fairly reliable predictor of weather (well, in the days before weather satellites, radars, wind balloons, barometers etc).

A red sky in the morning means an area of high pressure and fine weather, with its trapped dust and other particles, has moved and will continue moving towards the east, away from you. This is usually followed by an area of lower pressure and deteriorating weather, often from a cold front and band of rain that will move in from the west during the day.

A red sunset usually has fairly high cloud and often indicates that the worst of the weather has now eased, having moved off to the east, with higher pressure and improving weather approaching from the west for the next day.
