I have a 24-70 L on a 1d mark ii n. whenever i try to use manual and make it sharp in the viewfinder, the image does not come out sharp when i take the photo. when i use autofocus itl come out sharp, but becomes blurry in the viewfinder, not completely blurry, but not as sharp. I'm not sure what the problem is. thanks!

Sounds like you need to tweak the diopter dial on the body.

What is perfect and sharp? The viewfinder image when manually focusing?

What sort of shutter speed are you using? Lens with IS?

you may just need a focusing screen. it can be very difficut to judge a perfectly focused shot when manually focusing.

It sounds like you are saying that when you focus manually, the image appears sharp in the viewfinder but the resulting digital image is blurry, but when you use autofocus the viewfinder is blurry and the digital image is fine, right?

If that is the case, you need to adjust the diopter wheel next to the viewfinder. To do this, put the camera on a tripod, use the auto-focus to focus the camera, and then adjust the diopter adjustment wheel until the viewfinder is clear and sharp.

I tried doing what you said and it looks better in the viewfinder when i do auto focus. but when i switch it to manual focus, i can actually make it look sharper through the view finder, but when i do the image looks blurry. its as if the camera cant focus like the lens, that might sound weird

It could be a misaligned focus screen. I had the same problem with my 5dII after I put in the Eg-S screen.

Even though it looked seated fine, once I gave it another nudge and reclosed the housing all was fine.

Did you replace a focus screen recently?

You might need to keep making small adjustments to the diopter. Are you taking all of the shots at the same focal length? it's possible your lens has a focus issue. You could post two pictures to compare you focusing vs. the camera. that might help.

could be a number of things.

1. standard focus screen is too slow to show changes when using lenses faster than f/3.5, see http://www.jayandwanda.com …_man_focus/man_focus.html (external link) for explanation.

2. focus screen needs shimming to accurately focus. Canon calls these "washers." They are available inexpensive from Parts; adjustment can be tedious. Canon repair center also does shimming.

3. viewfinder diopter adjustment is off. should be adjusted without a lens for sharpest view of camera settings around frame.
