Spot Meter linked to active focal point

What I LOVE about the 1Dm3 body is the ability to link the spot meter to the active AF point.

For me, I shoot 95% in Portrait/vertical orientation so I have the outermost focus point selected so it falls on the face and I use the entire frame.

With my newly acquired 5D m2, spot meter is linked to center point only, so it is kind of a pain to be in Av or TV mode and have a black or white shirt get metered when I have the focus point on the face and have the skin tones get under or overexposed.

Anybody else wish they're non-1D body had this useful feature?

Yes but I make use of exposure lock feature on the camera. I am actually trialing a new set up, configured through the custom functions menu, where I focus using the AF-ON button and exposure lock with the half press on the shutter button. This makes it easier for me to solve the problem you described.

Yes, I've missed the linked spot meter ever since being spoiled by my EOS-3s, which had it.

The closest thing you can do on the 5DII is use Evaluative metering, which at least places extra emphasis on the area of the active AF point.

On the 7D, according to the manual:

Automatic AF Point selection: AE Lock is applied at the AF point that achieved focus.
Manual AF Point selection: AE Lock is applied at the selected AF point.

This is only when set to Evaluative Metering.

So in a way you do get spot metering off center if you use AEL on an off center AF point.
More controllable if you use Manual AF Point selection.

It may not exactly be Spot Metering but more like biased metering towards that AF point.

I use off center AF points all the time and always have good luck getting proper exposure/metering off those points when set to Evaluative.

evaluative takes the AF point into consideration on all bodies, doesn't it?

But as these two photos show, Evaluative does a pretty inadequate job as a substitute for Spot!

Try using the outer point in Evaluative and AE Lock on that point and see if it makes a different with/without AE Lock.
With AEL on outer point it should be closer to Spot metering with metering lock and recompose.

In evaluative, AE lock is implicit when using One Shot AF.

Good information, thanks.

I was wondering how to translate that feature to the 7D.
