I just bought a 24-70 f/2.8L and I'm worried that it's a dud. Can someone please point me to a thread that explains how I can test to see if the lens is as sharp as it should be?

Thanks!

Dan

examples of lack of sharpness? This will help us help you better than shooting wall charts and focus tests.

Kind Regards,

Ian

Why would you think its a dud? Post some sample photos.

Try this: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk …s3_af_micoadjustment.html (external link)

It might just be you being too picky.

Yes, most new lenses are duds, keep thinking that. But, seriously, why ask? Have you taken pix yet? How did they look?

Yeah, I've taken some test pics. Maybe it is just me being too picky for a $1300 lens? ;)

But seriously...for $1300 the thing better be sharp. I'll post some examples tomorrow.

I have a 1DmkIIn. I don't think I have the capability of AF adjustment?

What keeps you from briefly saying what you think is wrong, before posting?

Are you shooting with a tripod mounted camera, before you get too critical about your new lens?

I didn't use a tripod, no. But i was shooting at shutter speeds of about 1600 or so. I'll post some...and going back thru the test pics, maybe I am being too critical. I guess I'm just a little paranoid after spending $1300.

I put some shots up on my flickr page...still getting used to this forum and am not quite sure how to resize my images to post them here (the other forum I belonged to was based on filesize, not image size). http://www.flickr.com/photos/dlocurcio/ (external link)

There are three test shots there.

0026 was shot at f/2.8, 1/1600, ISO200.

0028 was f/8, 1/200, ISO200.

0024 was f/2.8, 1/4000, ISO200...but isn't very sharp because the reed was blowing in the wind.

For 0026 and 0028 I used spot focus right on the berry in the center of the frame. Upon further review it would appear that my claims are a bit bogus...

I need to shoot some people with the lens in good light. When I get some good results doing that I'll be happy. Check back here in a few days and I'll post some shots of people...

The 2.8 photos on your flickr look sharp to me.

yeah, it's actually pretty strange. Since they were shot in RAW i sometimes use Picasa viewer to view them. And in there they looked darker and less sharp. When I opened them up in Adobe PS Elements...all of a sudden they were brighter and sharper...odd.

It seems to me that all your pictures taken with the 24-70 are very sharp. I think people buy this lens, then read some of the negative comments and have buyers remorse. It's a great lens. Just have fun and take lots of pictures with it.
