Okay, so my Aunt owns a place in Costa Rica and has offered to fly me down for 8 days the end of January and beginning of February. We will basically tour the country and possibly travel to Nicaragua for a day or two... The plan is to see the sights, and take lots and lots of photos. The best will be going on the website with the potential to be sold. I'm not sure if that qualifies as "professional" or not for the purpose of insurance, but I thought I'd include that to give you a better idea of what I may or may not need.

I have never insured any of my gear, but it seems that it might be the time, going on a trip like this with a few thousand dollars worth of gear...

Anyway, I do not own a home, I am a student that rents... I know that most people take out camera insurance under their home owners policy, so that is not an option for me.

Does anybody have any suggestions?? I've used the search, but haven't found anything all that relevant to my situation.

I also have my car insured with progressive and I am not seeing a "personal articles" policy that they offer.

There seem to be a number of POTNers who have a standalone "personal articles policy" with State Farm. 100% coverage.

I have no personal experience with them, but I'm going to see about it soon.

Just one thing - make sure coverage applies outside the US...

I am waiting for a call back from State Farm. We'll see how that goes. I told the lady that my gear was worth ~4-5k

Be sure to bring rainproof covers for your equipment. CR is BEAUTIFUL! But it can rain like crazy...

Watch State Farm. There was a post on here a while back where they wouldn't cover something that was outside of their house. Pretty stupid to sell a policy and it not cover you.

I have stand-alone insurance through Hill & Usher, underwritten by The Hartford. Then again, it's a business plan.

Interesting. Can you point me to that post?

I'm about to sign up with them - maybe...

I'll see if I can dig it up. IIRC, they would cover everything just fine provided it was at home. However, once you used it outside the home, there were some issues.

Something to keep in mind.

Read through the first few posts here.

That was all done w/ a quick search. I'll see what else I can come up with.

Yeah, don't get a rider for your homeowner's insurance. Very good advice. That's why I was thinking of a standalone policy with State Farm - my other insurance is with Allstate.

Yep again. If you make money and they find out they can refuse coverage. You need a commercial policy in that case. That's true of all kinds of insurance.
