I have a G9 and love it. I'd suggest downloading the owners manual from the Canon site. If your friend will lend his G9 to you in advance for a few days, I'd suggest spending some quality time with both the camera and the owners manual to see what you can do with it.

The S90 is very good. It has a very fast lens and is just under the $400 mark, according to Amazon. As a matter of fact, you can get a package from Beach Camera that includes a bag, memory card, mini tripod, and a cleaning kit for the same $400. Sounds like a deal-breaker for me ;)
