I have a Markins M20 on the way, and I thought I would buy a QR plate for my gripped T1i while I'm at it :) So I'm looking at getting an Acratech plate: http://acratech.net …oductid=27&cat=194&page=1 (external link)

However, it doesn't appear that Acratech plates have a place for the safety stop pin on the M20 to fit into. Is the safety stop really that important? Will I regret not having my plate safety stopped? Markins plate is just so much more expensive...

i'd get a RRS plate which is even more expensive because you may want to upgrade to a RRS flip lever QR some day and RRS plates and ones made by wimberley are the only plates that fit that QR correctly.

with a RRS flip lever release you can top load your equipment quickly. with the flip lever and the proper plate -- i.e. RRS or WIMBERLEY -- you don't need no stinkin' safety pins :D.

now, i'm giving you advice that i did not follow myself. you see, i swore that the screw type QRs would be just fine but in reality i hated them. they were like a backwards move from the manfrotto RC2 plates. i quickly realized why the QRs had safety pins because i almost lost my camera once and did lose my monopod on another occasion when i had accidently loosened the QR knob while fiddling with ballhead and tilthead knobs, respectively.

i have since upgraded all my plates to RRS, and doing it right the second time really costs you more :D.

I would have definitely gotten an RRS plate, but they don't appear to make one for the BG-E5 grip unfortunately.

RRS and wimberley both sell universal plates.

if you're getting the wimberley universal camera plate let us know how it works out. if it doesn't move around much it might be a good plate to have for new cameras or a body that doesn't see a tripod much.
