Apparently my mother has formatted the SD memory card for her digital camera. She wants to recover the lost photos. I did a brief search online and there seems to be programs out there (that I need to buy) to recover the data. Are there any other options? What would you guys suggest?

I've used two programs with some degree of success in situations like this - Stellar Phoenix and Data Rescue.

Stellar Phoenix is good. I've used it to recover some big hard drives that crashed, just before I changed them out.
