We had a great day. We went on a 5 mile hike down to some hot springs right by Hoover Dam. Many great scrambles and a few rope descents. We found two tarantulas. Got to sit in the hot springs and watch the steam rise in the cold canyon. Pictures to follow tomorrow.

That sounds seriously unfun. Except the hot springs part.

Question... I just downloaded Skype to visit with a NY woman about Trudy.

When she calls me on it, is it voice? Text-like chat? Or video?

Yep. LOL! I know that's not very descriptive....I'm on there if you're interested. its great to connect with family and friends and stuff.

And, for the record, I did have other pics from my selfie session where I was smiling....my hair just looked the best in that one. And, Diane picked it.

I did. The hair just did it...she looked serious in all of them.

Pics!! I was pleased with them too. Permie I saw your question....Simply Canvas has a really good reputation for quality....and I've done Canvas on Demand, Simply Canvas and WHCC now, and COD won't get my biz again, most likely. Not that they were bad, but not as nice as the others.

There was a big earthquake in Mexicali, Mexico, about 3/4 hours ago. I wonder if John and Heather felt it. 5.8 is pretty big, although we didn't really feel it here (120 miles from Mexicali)

Really? Surprised I didn't hear anything about it at work, our chair plant is in Mexicali.

I live in a restricted neighborhood too. So the choice with dogs is either some form of tie out or an invisible fence. The fence works well...even when it is off, the dogs now where it is and don't approach. It doesn't stop other dogs from coming in, but other dogs are supposed to be confined as well. Most of the neighbors have invisible fences too....so roaming critters usually is not a big issue.

We are moving to a restricted neighborhood this conversation has been interesting. We do intend to go with some kind of invisible fencing for Bax. Not that he is out long without us but always on a restraint. Since we won't be able to look into it further until the spring, we are planning on running a cable from the back of the house where the garage (human door) exits to the far corner of the detached garage. When we are out with him, he will be on a dragging lead and under a sharp eye so we can grab him if necessary and start training him on his yard boundaries. Basically the back yard and area between the two garages.

There is also a 1/4+ mile loop that goes through the neighbor hood, it is my intention (spelled New Year Resolution) to walk that loop several times a week with Bax. For both our sakes.:D;)

You would be surprised what dogs like.

Spoiled wimpy Bax seeks out any padding be it an area rug, kennel cushion, sofa cushion, or human bed.

Taking a break this evening, I've had the chills since getting home from work. Between the cold and lack of sleep, my body is protesting, think I'll listen to it this evening.

There are several advantages to it....the dogs have way more freedom to move about and take care of business. They are free to run and tear over almost a full acre...I have more area inside the invisible fence than the local dog park. During the summer, I often sit out in the gazebo in the evening and have a couple of beers....the dogs can be out and I don't have to worry about taking my eye off them for a second.....the biggest advantage....about the morning it is -10 and you feel like crap....now you don't have to go stand out in it waiting for them to play.:D

Evening!! w?e had a great time today, times Square is BUZZING with about-to-be New Years Eve activity!! I didn't do much shooting as Eli and Tommy are easily lost in huge crowds, they just aren't used to needing to be so close to us IRL.

The show was among the best I have EVER seen, Becky if it comes to Chicago you have GOT to take Aidan! It is really *that* good. They go on tour beginning in January I think, as the show here is closing.

Cisco does good all night sleeping in his bed next to me on the floor. But when he wakes in the morning he just can't stand it anymore. We have to kick him out to keep him off of the bed.

It wasn't bad yesterday as the temps were around 50f. After being in the water for about 10 minutes I was so warm that I was able to get dried off and clothed before I got cold.

There are about 25+ within 100 miles of here. Those are in a canyon down by the dam, but there are many near/in Death Valley, north of here and towards Utah.

If ever there was a case of the symbolism beig far greater than the crime itself this is it. I still can't get my head round how this came about. Three guys sitting in a pub and on says "I know, lets steal the sign over the gate at Auschwitz" to which the other two said "Yeh, great idea". It just does not make sense.

The other ting that this video reminds me is how intimidating it must be to live in a country where the police hide their identity behind face masks.

That^^

Jon wrote in post #9289893 (external link)
There are two kinds of electric fences; one is a buried wire arrangement that sends out a low-powered "trigger" signal which activates the collar when it's in range. Those will only shock or signal the dog when he gets within the trigger distance of the fence (from either side). The other is a radio beacon that delimits a "safe zone". As long as the collar's in range of the beacon (or one of the beacons, for irregular areas), it won't go off. But if the dog gets to far away, the collar will trigger, and continue to do so (within its parameters) until the dog gets back within range. They both have operational disadvantages too. With the first, if there is a power outage to the transmitter the dog can go right out of the zone if he's so inclined. With the second if there's a power outage the poor dog gets shocked even though he's well within the "safe" area.

Wow the radio beacon one is stupid and cruel in case of a power failure. We had, and still have but needs repair, the buried wire kind. Jinx had it on the first two years of her life and didn't start wandering out of the yard until she was 9 years old. There are advantages over a traditional fence. A dog bent on wandering will continually look for an out from a traditional fence. They try to go over, under, through, or wait for a forgotten or breached gate. A dog with an invisible fence stays in, they don't test the perimeter so even in a power failure they stay in. Also raccoons, possums, squirrels, cats and other critters that could get cornered in a fenced yard, leading to a fight, can just run over the line. I like an invisible fence because even if I don't leave my dog in the yard I know they are not going to run into the street while we are going to and from the car or doing yard work. That said I don't think they are great to just leave a dog unattended. I think one still needs to keep a loose eye on them in case other critters do wander in or in the worse case a two leg critter doesn't come in with bad intentions like stealing your dog. I have always feared that. The first time Jinx left the yard after all those years I was a cross between devastated and homicidal thinking someone stole her. I don't know that we will hook this one up again but I was just weighing in on the conversation. I know some people hate the idea of a shock and I respect that but I will say the shock is really mild, harmless and worth it for the safety of my dog. They get shocked a handful of times in the training but that is only if they break the rules and test the parameter training you give them before turning it on. I used to cut the wires by accident all the time with work. I would repair them then take the collar over and test it. many give a tone prior to shock but many don't so I would shock myself to test it. I have done that thousands of times and don't feel it is too harsh, it is more startling than anything.
