What do you think is causing the lighting after the blacklight is turned off? I know that crystals are supposed to absorb energy when placed in direct sunlight. I wonder if it is a release of light or just light continuing to reflect off of all the different facets.

The technical explanation is this:

When a photon hits a molecule of the mineral, an electron will absorb that energy and move to a higher energy level (orbital) what then happens depends on the chemistry of the mineral:

The electron will immediately fall back to its previous energy level, emitting a photon as it falls back, The number of energy levels it falls back determines what the color of fluorescence will be.

The electron will stay at the higher orbital for some time, eventually falling back to its original level, releasing a photon. This is what happens in the case of phosphorescence. The energy of the photon that contacted the crystal is stored for a period of time, then the electron drops, releasing a photon as it does.

This Java applet (external link) shows what happens...

GAH!!!! dadbassitlesonofabullfinch!!! @!#%$@^$#&^

I just emptied out my inbox/outbox (mainly because it was backed up to nearly 1k...even emptying it and saving the smwyg stuff has me at nearly 200) and I accidentally erased the frostypaws recipe and Becky's cookie recipe. If any of you will have pity on me and re-direct me, I would appreciate it.

Hi Everyone :D
Had a great day skiing with Caitlin and Ethan today, the weather was a bit cool, but quite bearable, especially since we were having fun. :D

give me a gas cooker any day over an electric one.

For sure, most of our customers have us install a gas cooktop (cooker), and an electric oven (hob). We also install lots of dual fuel ranges so they can have the best of both all in one.

Awww, well i hope she is fine enough to sit through the show :) Enjoy the city.

Nice shot. :D

Best I can do at the moment. Aidan about 2 years ago.

Tiffany, you really must smile for your avi. :D
You look good either way, but without a smile it is more like an ID photo for a librarian. :p

Depends on the stove. We have a 6 burner Wolf and each burner grill weighs 9 pounds. Thats a lot of iron and it can hold a whole lot of heat for quite some time. :)

If I was redoing my kitchen, I would opt for a Wolf range and not a separate stove and oven. They are pricey, but make a great product.

There is also a 1/4+ mile loop that goes through the neighbor hood, it is my intention (spelled New Year Resolution) to walk that loop several times a week with Bax. For both our sakes.:D;)

At only 1/4 mile, you should do 8 loops, 7 days a week for Bax (and you). ;) :D

The hot springs are the best part. The water was about 100f and perfect.

I wouldn't go in until they cleared out that beached whale.

I'm actually spending some time tonight processing pictures in my "Needs to be processed" collection in LR. Thought I would share a few as they get done.

Very nice, Eric. :D
Cool shots of the sheep too. I remember Lisa coming on her first hiking trip with me. It was about a 7 hour hike into the Ghost Wilderness, which is just outside of Banff National Park, so the sheep were very familiar with people. There was a herd of about 40 sheep, and when they saw us they started walking towards us likely looking for a handout. Lisa started freaking out and screaming at me to release the dogs (we had three of them carrying gear for us). I could hardly hold my laughter while Lisa was in this terrified state. I kept the dogs at heel, and just shooed them away myself.

Why does my almost 2 year old enjoy putting AA batteries in his mouth? Where does he even find them? We are constantly chasing after him telling him to spit something out whether it's a penny, a screw from the basement or his favorite batteries. GAH! What is the fascination and is it harmful as long as he doesn't swallow it?

Add me to that list above because of that below.

I wouldn't go in until they cleared out that beached whale.

I just checked my captains log and we have hiked about 22 miles in the last 6 weeks. That's a pretty good pace we are hoping to keep up all year.
