Yes

I could see it if there were mountains. I'll put up with a lot for mountains. But we have nothing but flat. We could roll up a few large snoballs and play snow pool, it's that flat.

Too many radical elevation changes in NY for skis....at least on my property....snowshoes are the only practical mode....

I guess thats the advantage in living in a place where we look at a 25 foot rise and groan because were going to have to climb that hill. :)

But x-skis work in hills as well. Gotta do that herring bone thing going up, but it's a blast going down. :)

Herring bone in the woods is not an easy trick....works ok on nice trails though. That is the other plus to snowshoes...no need for a trail.

I have gone up lots of steep stuff with skis, you just have to put the skins on and you can climb fairly steep stuff then, just as steep as on shoes. Then strip them off for the trip down, WAY more fun then shoes.

When pulling pulks on winter trips, I usually take both skis and snowshoes, but the skis see 90% or more use, as they are much easier to travel distance on.

Morning.

Jamie you should get Eli a friend. I like to get the rescues that are about 6 to 10 months old. They usually have some of the basics like house training already done.

My property in NY is a heavily wooded hardwood stand....lots of tops down as a result of timber harvests....I just can't envision anyone trying to get through there on skis. There aren't any logging roads....our timber contract prohibits them....last harvest most of the skidding was done by a pair of Belgians.

One of my favorite parts of snowshoeing is getting out in the woods where it is absolutely quiet.

I love to do the same but prefer x-country skis. You can cover a lot more ground on skis than on shoes. It's tiring walking on those things.

Yes it is, and if your feet aren't built to walk perfectly level, it makes it mighty tricky. Doesn't help if you have severe lack of coordination to start with. But, its still fun to try.

No kidding, your snot melts? Sorry....that was tacky, but your post still made me chuckle.

Hi everyone!

A quick stop to see how you all started the year...

Here are a few shots of my snowshoe hike of last Sunday...

We walked up the road of one of Switzerland's beautiful passes (Furka (external link)), which is closed for traffic in winter...

Some of you have probably already seen the pictures on FB...

Deeds, these shots are gorgeous. What a beautiful area!

Ok so the Vet said that Eli needs a friend. I am pondering it but don't know if I should get a puppy or a dog a year or so old. She also said get a girl dog. If I do that I'll have to get one of the fixed ones though

Unless you have a lot of time at home right now, don't get a puppy. Get one that is a little older.

Skrim17 wrote in post #9364070 (external link)
does he get to play with other dogs a lot? I would see who he likes to pay with most and go from there. do you have the time for a puppy?

^^ That.

And I don't understand why your vet would tell you not to have Eli neutered?

For sure, skis are tougher if you have to constantly make sharper turns like you have there. Just like when we are at camp in the backcountry, skis are a real pain to move around in for doing stuff in camp, like cooking, chopping wood, and the such.

I'm wondering if it's because of the hormones...bone strength etc?

JAMIE, I agree with Cat ^^ don't get a puppy unless you have tons of time. My last year literally was a complete frustration (most of the time) because of having two puppies & trying to train them both. oh man.

Once our dogs hit 8-10 months, they really stopped (for the most part) the puppy behavior but were still young enough to teach them things.

My wife suffers from a serious lack of coordination. The first time we came across a decent downhill with a turn at the end, I was concerned she would not be able to handle the turn and end up in a tree. :)
