Nice work Christian. Good exposure settings. It is nice seeing hockey photos where the ice is not grey and the white unis are not blown out.

Great shots.. How do you like that 135 f2.0 over the 70-200 f2.8? Besides the (f2.0) factor.

Good captures; I checked out the rest of your set and I liked the little kids shots. I've shot a lot from the penalty box but this year I've been trying to gain a different perspective and shoot from the cornors through glass. (and it's been trying). Have you had any success doing that in the rink you shoot in?

Jeff:
I bought the 135 primarily to use in this rink as it is very dark and I can shoot at 2500 ISO as compared to 3200 ISO with 70-200. I like the lens but obviously with f2.0 focus is critical and I find it a bit "short" when shooting from the box into the far corners. Fortunately the 50D allows some crop leeway with 15MB. It also takes some time to get used to not being able to zoom in and out. First few uses I ended up messing up focus as I was spinning the focus ring trying to zoom out or in on players as he skated!

Terry:
I often will shoot through the glass at our rink. Here are a couple from warm ups in the same game. The trick is finding nice clean glass (usually the first 6 inches right above boards is cleanest) and also compensating (in post) for "greenish" tinge the glass sometimes causes. I like this position in games because players come right at you and you can get some good facial expressions as they skate into the offensive zone.

I ask because I was at a High school game and a newspaper photographer was using 2 1D MK3's with a 135mm f/2.0 and a 100mm f/2.0 mounted. I didn't talk to the guy but I was checking out his equipment. I was looking over his shoulder at his view finder and his pics looked good.

Ya I get so frustrated with the lighting at the rinks my son skates at! I was looking into a 100mm f/2.0 but i don't know.... Thanks for the input.

Nice Shots Christian! WIth the crop factor of the 50D, the 135 isn't too bad eh?

Yep, effectively a 216mm lens which works well. When light permits though, I do also like the flexibility of the 70-200f2.8L.
