Shot my first BB of the season. Need some help on the lighting. My aim of the lights plus the air vent location kept the light up court. I need feedback. Is the light fall off OK? Preferable? Or, should I re-aim the lights further down court?

1. The light set up. Note the air vent. To me, the light seems pretty well "trapped" on the far side of the vent.

One other thing. The strobes in the far left and far right corners used the "long throw" Alien Bee reflectors and the center two were the regular 11". Your guess is as good as mine as to whether they are an improvement.?.

I like the falloff. Gives good separation of the players but know that for some it will be an issue. You might try using a shorter reflector and aiming them diagonally across the court, feathering the direct light on the floor with most of it spilling to the background.

Looking at your setup photo, what is on the other side of the two windows above the exit doors? Is that outside or a second level in the building? If it is to a second level, have you ever tried shooting the strobes directly through the windows from the back side? Being frosted, they might make a great diffuser.

No luck with the windows. They go to the outside.

Send a couple of kids out there with ladders. :-)

Again, I like what you posted as is but if you wanted to try and work on the background and did not want to go with the feathering idea, you could set up your 580's somewhere downcourt with gobo's on them to add some background fill and eliminate the flare back at the camera.

Love the ladder idea! I've needed to have two kids work as grips for a long time now. ;)

I may just try to adjust the aim a bit next time. The fall off is OK and beginning to grow on me but stops me from using the 300 down court.

Now if somebody has a cure for a ladies varsity BB game where the score is 5-8 at halftime (22-19 final), that would be great.

One of the teams I cover on occasion was down 47-4 at halftime Friday and ended up getting beat 83-13. Two players scored and 9 of their points were free throws. :-) Glad I was shooting video at a different game that night.
