I haven't used the video feature on the 5DmkII until last week. I was at my son's school winter program and wanted to capture some video. I recorded for about 2 minutes and then the camera stopped recording, the red light on the back came on solid and the LCD on top said "Busy". I figured it was writing to the card and after a few seconds it would be back to normal. I left it for over 5 minutes and it still kept the "Busy" indicator. Turned it off, it didn't turn off. I ended up having to pull the battery. No video was on the card.

Last night I was at a concert by my daughter, recorded 2 video segments fine, 3rd, same lockup as I experienced last week.

I'm using 8Gb SanDisk Extreme III cards which according to the manual should be plenty fast enough (they are 30 Mb/sec). I don't know what else to look at.

Anybody else experience this or have any ideas on what may be causing it?

Moose, it has happened to me as well. Then I found the following link, which cleared it for me. http://lightingmods.blogspot.com …d-markii-video-locks.html (external link). I now know that it is the SanDisk Extreme III 8GB cards which is exactly what I am using. I hope that helps...

I had a similar problem with the 4GB Extreme III in a 7D. The buffer would fill after anywhere from 8 seconds to 2 minutes of recording. The camera did, however, recover gracefully without locking up. The buffer showed full for a few seconds and the camera returned to normal use without the video being stored on the card. SanDisk replaced the card under warranty and so far I've had no issues. The original card was purchased almost a year ago and used without incident in a 50D.

Note: Immediately after the card showed problems, I purchased an 8GB Ultra II to use until the Extreme III was replaced. It performed well.

Thanks so much! That is exactly the symptoms I'm experiencing. Looks like it's time to find a new card.

Try doing a low level format on the card.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealing's done

Moose, I haven't tried anything other than a 8GB SanDisk Ultra III, so do let me know if the issue is resolved. The new firmware hasn't fixed it yet.....

Are you talking about formatting it in the camera? I do this every time I insert a CF into the camera.

I have not tried formatting the card on the PC first because I have heard people say they have had issues with that.

I don't think you can do a low level format of a CD in the cam. One reason I like Lexar cards is because they come with a nice app that runs in Windows that does low level formatting, diagnostics, and secure erase.

Contact the manufacturer and see what they recommend. This maybe the culprit. I've seen drives become unusable because of corruption that only a low level format will resolve.
