Did a quick search and didn't see a thread like this. Mods, please let me know if this is not allowed.

With winter upon a good deal of us, I figured it would be a good time to share some winter sport photos. Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, luge, snowmobiling, sledding, and even snowball tossing, or anything else you think qualifies as a winter sport.

I'll start off with a few skiing/snowboarding photos from today.

I headed out with a buddy of mine in late November for a trip to Crystal Mountain in Washington state. First time on the slopes with decent equipment. Purchased a Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW prior to heading out with intentions of hitting the slopes more often this year with gear in tow.

Great shots Ronnie. Mind sharing your settings for some of us newbs?? I'm headed to Breckenridge in January and hope to get some photos. The snow presents alot of exposure problems for me though.

Thanks

I can't speak for how Ronnie does it but I shoot snow much like shooting hockey. Expose for the snow, then overexpose it about a stop. This can get the snow looking nice and bright and expose your subject as well. Obviously, there's lots you can do from that point since you may not want a featureless snow so you have to dial it back a bit. Flash is also key imo. I'm not a HSS fan for action generally but shooting action in snow is one place I'll make an exception. Just a few things to consider but ones that I find are pretty useful and don't require much in the way of additional gear. A CPL is also very nice to have on the end of the lens, shoulda mentioned that as well.

As Namaste said, overexpose the snow by at least one stop to make it white. If you expose down the middle the snow will come out gray. For these shots, I took a couple test shots of just the snow and dialed in the settings so a good bump showed between the middle and right side of the histogram. Also shoot in manual to fully control the exposure.

Have fun in Breckenridge.

I had my first time up in the snow this weekend. I had a great time and will be back up there this weekend. CC appreciated. I'm not familiar with shooting this sport much, so please let me know if there are any angles that would have improved the shot.

rob you got a pretty good angle on this but it might be a better shot if you cut out half of the sequence its really hard to see his trick (IMO), good shot though i cant wait to make it up on the mountains this year.

Thanks my man. I did attempt to do that and didn't like the results. But I think you're right, he loses the highlight of the trick with this edit. Thanks for the cc.

Great shots everyone. I'm planning to upgrade to a 40D or 50D from my point and shoot lumix in the near future and I'm hoping to use it on the slopes. Do any of you have any bag suggestions? I plan to take it with me while snowmobiling and snowboarding.
