Mike, thanks for showing the setup. I was discussing this very thing today w/ my wife to use during indoor soccer. I'll be setting up a MkII w/ 24-105. Thanks for the tips. I'll have to try this out for outdoor this spring.

Put the camera IN the goal. I do....

If you've never had a ref have a problem with this for safety reasons you've been very lucky.

Also hope you have good liability insurance as I've seen plenty of players crash all the way to the back of the net and hitting a camera at speed wouldn't be good for them!

Nice set-up Mike! I really need to get some remotes going. Hopefully I'll get one set up for basketball here soon.

Here's what I use to trigger my camera remotely with my Cybersyncs.

I love the cutting board setup...that would be a great setup if you could shoot from the side lines then trigger it 30-50 yards away to the goal.

Hello and thanks for the link, I have the cybersyncs too and looking to do the same type of remote camera setup... what kind of distance do you get with the remotes..to fire them off.
Do you use a pre-focus or burst mode of this device too. what does the switch on that calbe do for you in remote set up mode..? while away from the camera using the cybersyncs.?
thanks
Joe

That was my intention with this setup. Unfortunately the wireless set up didn't reach that far. But it did trigger the camera when I was at the corner of the field. Like I said, next time I will use the Skyports.

In my set up, I had prefocused with the lens on manual and taped it down (see pic). and I was using burtst mode (6.5 fps).

Now I understand.

I used to use a remote control to trigger a camera from a large kite. It was very challenging, but occasionally I'd get a decent shot or two. Then, eventually, I learned to just let the camera fire on its own (about 300 shots) and then bring it in and check the pics.

Examples:

This one was triggered by remote (point and shoot camera) from about 400 feet in altitude. The white beach towel is mine, and my wife is sitting on it. Slightly to the right of the towel is me flying the kite. The string has been erased in PP.

This one was with a velcro strap I made that held the button down, firing a shot every one second until the card was full (you can see barrel distortion in the photo--the horizon doesn't curve that much at that altitude--about 200 feet, maybe 150):

Mike, that bottom shot looks like it belongs on Google maps! :-)

As soon as I can get a break, I'll take my Skyport gear to the park and see how far I can get. They are supposed to be good for 320 feet. I figure if I set up the camera with a flash it should be pretty easy to tell if the camera is firing or not.

You should be able to get 300-350ft consistently with Cybersyncs. Pre-focus in MF, just do like Mike did and use an aperture that will get you enough DOF to get everything you need in focus. The switch on the cable is to keep the camera "alive".

I don't believe that burst would work ( haven't tried it). That is one disadvantage of using a flash trigger to trip the shutter. The flash trigger only sends out a single signal and not the constant signal need for burst shots. I think that Pocketwizards do have burst capability, but I've never used them so I can't say for sure.

Ok thanks, very much,
I just ordered the cable from flashzebra. will try that out when the cable comes in..very interested to see what happens.
I was thinking about having a setup on one end of the basketball court while I am on the other end.

I always check my remote set-up's with the ref's No matter the sport. If the camera is with-in the playing field (goal) I check with the coaches as well. Liability insurance is in place.

I've had my set-up train wrecked in a hockey goal a few times. I've asked the goalie if he has had any problems with it being in there. He doesn't.

Only had 1 issue once from a LAX coach. His issue was both goals or none.

If you raise your receiver higher off the ground you will get better reception. The ground will cause interference. I ofter hang a pocket wizard off the side of the net and it will trigger 3/4 of the field length.

This is strange (that you guys are struggling with distance). Most remote control airplanes (the kind that start at about 150 bucks) can get a half mile of range from the transmitter to the receiver.

Thank you. bw!

I've been working on a box for this kind of set up. Great job! Glad to see some of the results of this type of set up!

My friend Robert Benson made a remote trigger that works at distances up to 20 miles. Check it out.

Great to here of the differrent remote set ups.I was at a recent Scottish premier league game, when at half time one of the national paper guys showed everyone his shots fron behind the goal. The first dozen or so were ok, but then all the shots were of the crowd, then a couple of behind the goal again.and he had missed 2 goals going in.He was firing the remote from the other end of the pitch. One of the other newspaper guys noticed what happened,The goal keeper had noticed the camera and turned it towards the crowd and then later turned it back.
It was a laugh listening to the pros moans.
