In the first shot, use of a flash with principal subjects at different distances will cause the near subjects to be overexposed and the distant subjects to be underexposed. You were quite lucky in that there was almost enough ambient light to avoid using the flash at all.

The colors look somewhat un-natural, and I would attribute this to the fact that your are mixing sunlight and flash at close to equal levels, which would make it difficult to establish good color balance.

I think I could say the same is true in the second picture in regard to the mixing of ambient and flash lighting.

Ideally, flash should only be used when a little fill light is needed to soften facial shadows. I think that here the flash could have and should have been avoided - one more stop worth of ISO should have been enough.
