I'll start - Below is a 7D image @ 560mm not cropped and two 100% crops from it. The un-cropped is sharpened and only resized to get it's below 3mb for hosting.

The full jpeg is almost 13mb - this thumbnail below opens a resized image (2000x3000) saved @ 11 quality in PS to get it under 3mb for hosting.

While I can't compete with these great images above, here is my image. Full frame then 100% crop. Sharpening at default (3 in DPP), no processing at all. I think it's plenty sharp for me for an 18mp image. Try to beat this detail with a 40D, or XSi (which are great cameras themselves). I personally think the 100% crop could even use less sharpening actually.

I think this is another proof that the 7D indeed is capable of sharp images even at 100% crop. But just like I mentioned in other threads, since the magnification factor at 100% is very high on an 18mp sensor, all the conditions must be right for a super sharp image. Many times other negative factors as an inferior lens, potential minor AF inaccuracy (such as the movement of the subject when in ONE SHOT AF mode), motion blur, atmospheric conditions etc. may prevent the 7D from producing images this sharp because every little flaw is magnified in a 100% crop from an 18mp camera. However, that's not the camera's fault. It just records the image that was cast on the sensor.
There have been a few good car analogy's in other threads. So if you own a sports car that is capable of going 160mph, you can't blame the car just because you can't drive that fast in rush hour on an L.A. freeway. But you can take the car to a closed track and drive fast if you want to because it's capable of that speed. So it's not the car's fault that you can't use all that speed. So it'd be very unfair to actually state that the car sucks because you can't drive it that fast on a public road.

Canon 17-55 2.8 IS, ISO 100, f/5.6, 55mm

(An interesting thing happened when I was making the crop. As I selected the cropped area and wanted to copy to a new file, CS3 warned me that this software does not support the printing of bank notes! Then it even automatically opened some bank note anti-counterfeiting info website. All this just because selecting 1/4 of a Hungarian bank note in Photoshop. Weird.)

Was this taken with the EF 400mm f/2.8L I.S. lens+ 1.4x TC II converter?

If so, this image just put the icing on the cake as proof for me to buy this lens + converters! Absolutely incredible!

I agree this one!

This same happens with other models too. I was previously taking photos with IXUS 750 and changed to IXUS 980 and was first little disapointed because of image quality. I thought that old model took better images even it did not have any IS features or what so ever. That was not quite a case, I needed to learn how, what and when ´to use settings in different situations.

Now I changed to 980 to D7 (which is my first DSLR), sure image quality is from different planet compared to point&shoot but i'm not able to get such detailed photos im seeing here on the forums. I'm not claiming camera at all, im pretty sure it's me who is not on the camera level yet and what is said that this camera is a beast when used right!

Holy $%#$% !

So many times I've heard guys give excuses, about how pixel peeping is not important....
.....But so what if it is ! These are freaking outstanding ! I can only start to imagine the kind of 30" x 40" print these would make !
It's kind of not right for you guys to show me these right now though, as I'm a long ways out, from buying a new 7D.... I'll be working on my pro lens collection for at least a couple years.

Geeez, those are just stunning !

Fish

PS, Tell me again, why people spend $6000 on a FF camera ?

1) Depth of field
2) IQ .. my 5DMK2 can smoke any 7D file in both resolution, noise, and print quality. No contest.
3) you can buy a full frame body for $2,500.
