How long should it take for the sensor cleaning function on a Rebel XT?

The XT is my daughters camera. My old rebel has it too. It is about 6 years old.

The feature allows the flipping-up of the mirror thus letting access to the sensor. That's the only thing it does.

Once the mirror is up, you need to clean the sensor yourself... A puff from a blower or a quick wipe with a swab will do the trick.
