I've been using a 18-55mm lens with my 350D for some time now, But just bought a 10-20mm Sigma as thats what i've been after now for a while!

My settings are typically around this :

ISO-800/ISO-1600
0.25 sec (1/4)
f/5.6

I use a 580EX II too, but not sure what to read to post up as i'm new to using it.:o

72dpi is what we see on the screen of the computers.

Not since back in the eighties... :p
My laptop (Powerbook 12") has about 107ppi. My LaCie22" about 100ppi.

Because all cameras shoot at 300DPI, ALL OF THEM.

No. They don't.

Dpi in a digital file is meaningless. It's the number of pixels that counts.

Have a look at a raw file processed in Adobe software: The default there is at 240 ppi. Canon DPP defaults to 350ppi. The camera probably writes "72ppi" into the Exif.

A camera sensor has a much, much larger pixel density then 300ppi ;)
And again, the figure is meaningless anyway.

I've printed a 10D file at 1 meter. Looks good enough for me.
I've printed a 1D2 file at 3,5 meters wide. Again, good enough (for the purpose: A backdrop)

On the topic of Flash for Nikon: Does the D40x act as a wireless controller?
That would be nice if you want to take the flash off camera. Otherwise you'll need a dedicated Nikon cord.
I don't use my flash off camera for nightclub shooting, since I find the handling too awkward. Some other people do.
I do bounce the flash if there is any option to do so. And I use a Stofen Omnibounce with the top cut out. I also gel the flash to match ambient.

Couple of decent video's by Joe McNally here: http://nikonusa.com …trol-of-Color-Part-1.html (external link)
Not about nightclub photograpy, but the principle is the same: You use flash to illuminate the subject, and let ambient light the background.

I deal with printing for the past 4 years of my life, I can safely say that I know more about printing then you do;)

so you think you know about printing? you're quoting DPI, when posters are printed with a line screen (offset lytho), which is known as LPI (lines per inch) when printed in C M Y K makes up a rosette pattern as each colour is printed at a different angle.. different print mediums use a different line screen.

back in the 90's Newspapers printed with a LPI of 85 (or a res of 170DPI for raster images) they now, with the help of technology print @ 100LPI

magazines print 150-200 LPI depending on the quality of the publication

flyers general printing is 133-150 LPI unless you state you want otherwise

Posters are usually around 133

Billboards are something like 3-6

dont mix Raster and Vector images up, vector look crap when printed low res..

oh and i've printed 30x20 in posters from my 20D (8.2mpix) and they've come out looking great ;)

To: 123shootwith me:.... Maybe I can be of some help to you, and maybe not....
Okay.....If your gonna shoot in nightclubs, I doubt it if your gonna be allowed to shoot with the flash on!. so, for most clubs, thats a no no.....I'm attaching one shot that lets me get away with a lot of other problems, such as using a flash.

These are some of the setting I used for shooting many many shots on the night that I took these.
And, no, I'm not a pro.... Okay. I set my camera to "Shutter Speed Priority" which indicated 1/80 sec. and also indicated the aperture at 2.8. I set the ISO at 1600 and that seems to work out good.
I then took the shot, along with many many others that came out quite good.
So, NO, I don't advise you to get too comfortable with using the flash when inside clubs, unless the management tells you its okay.

As for using high ISO"s. I just bought the Canon T1i because it can go all the way up to ISO 12.800 which of course I don't use. But I've also been getting good enough shots with ISO 6400. Now, there are those who will tell you that ISO 6400 is much to noisy!.....look, rather than lose the shot, if I've gotta use ISO 6400, then I use it. Of course, ISO on my Canon T1i is pretty darn good for my tasted anyways. Again, there are those who'll disagree with me vehemently!.. Everyone's different. Okay, I'll attach the shot that I took with ISO 1600, (Yes, without ANY FLASH!)....

I was sitting in the audience when I took this. And, this shot of the actors, is a off broadway musical, currently playing on broadway at the 47th street theater, called "Newsical"...

I hope this is of some help to you. Feel free to email me for any more info.

"Nightclub" is very different from performance on stage.
I can pretty much guarantee that most nightclub shots are made using flash.
